Greece has so much to offer that it can really be overwhelming. For those who wish to stay close to nature while discovering the country where civilization was born, this is an ideal daily escape from Athens, specially for the active traveler who likes exploring new places on two wheels!
If you are in Athens and you are looking for a different, and energetic experience away from the city, then the bike excursion in the charming island of Spetses is just for you! This amazing and unique adventure perfectly combines sports with leisure, nature with culture and, of course, lots of fun! During a full day you will go around the whole island on a mountain bike, swim in its stunning beaches, visit the old port and taste the local food!
These are some of the places you will discover while pedaling:
- Visit the charming Spetses town with its picturesque old port
- Ride your bike and go around the whole island on a scenic route (25 km ride)
- Enjoy spectacular scenic views over the Saronic Sea, amidst pine forests
- Explore the secret Bekiris Sea Cave and swim inside the cave!
- Swim in the crystal clear waters of Vrelos, Zogeria and Ag. Paraskevi beaches
- Complement your daily adventure eating local specialties and sipping a glass of ouzo
Your meeting point is Gate D at Piraeus Port at around 7.30 am (depending on the ferry schedule of the day), where your tour leader will greet you and provide basic information about the program of the day. You will then embark on a high-speed ferry that will take you to Spetses island in approximately 2 hours. Once you get to the quaint capital town of Spetses, you will enjoy a short walk around its narrow paved streets and alongside the coast, also passing by the historic Posidonio Hotel, one of the main attractions of the island. You can optionally enjoy a coffee in one of the nice cafes at the port, before yo pick up your mountain bikes and start your tour around the island.
You will follow the coastal road, along the rugged green shores of the northern side. After a short ascent, you will make a stop at the scenic Zogeria bay (km. 6), where you can refresh yourselves by swimming in its crystal clear waters (depending on the weather). Then, you'll continue some more uphill, towards the southern side of the island. The panoramic views of the sea and the Peloponnese will definitely captivate you! Half-way from the beginning, you’ll make your main stop at the beach of Ayioi Anargiroi (km. 13), where the nice beach will be ideal for some rest. At the right side end of the beach, you will explore the famous Bekiris Sea Cave, where islanders fled during an invasion of the Albanians, and where some scenes from Greek movies were shot.
Leaving Ayioi Anargiroi you will head east and uphill following the road into the forest. After 8 kilometers you will be entering Spetses town from Ag. Marina. The old port is the next point of interest that you will visit. As sunset approaches, enlightening the picturesque houses and buildings alongside the port, you will get you camera and capture the sheer beauty! With the bike tour coming to its end, you will return the bikes and you will still have some time to spend on the island. You can use this time to wonder around the alleys of Spetses town, shop some souvenirs or local specialties, or sit in a seafood tavern to sample typical mezes and Greek ouzo.
In the evening, you’ll take the ferry back to Piraeus (around 20:00, depending on the ferry schedule of the day)
