About the activity

Visit ancient ruins and castles on this amazing tour of the Boyne Valley, Ireland

Take this guided tour through the Boyne Valley, Ireland and see up close the many amazing castles and historic Celtic sites the region has to offer.

Within this fantastic, insightful trip you’ll come across ancient monuments, temples and Norman castles, shining a light on over 5000 years of Irish and European history.

This truly wonderful area is full of natural beauty, mystery and intrigue – making it a must for anyone with an interest in this magnificent island’s rich cultural past.

Location
The Boyne Valley spreads across both Louth and Meath counties, north of Dublin on Ireland’s northeast coast. Officially recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site, it has become an important area for understanding European history, whilst offering a unique window into Ireland's ancient past. The closest international airport is located in Dublin, a 40-minute drive away. The valley is named after the Boyne River which runs through its steep, imposing peaks.

Activity
Meet your guides at your meeting point in Dublin before driving up towards Meath and Louth counties. The first stop on the tour is FourKnocks, an ancient passage chamber tomb built over 5000 years ago. Here you’ll be able to pass into the tomb and see early stone inscriptions from some of Ireland's earliest settlers. Then it’s onto the Hill of Tara, with the Ancient Seat of the High Kings containing a number of historic monuments. The trip then goes on to The Hill of Slane, Slane castle and onto Trim Castle, where scenes from the Hollywood blockbuster ‘Brave Heart’ were filmed in the 1990s. The last two locations on the tour are New Grange and the Monasterboice Monastery with its wonderful high crosses, founded by Saint Buite in 500 A.D! After this fantastic trip, it’ll be time for the team to take you on a relaxed drive back to your drop-off point.

Conditions
Tours operate between March and October in Ireland’s spring and summer months. The climate is warm and occasionally wet during these seasons. Children under the age of 18 y/o must be accompanied by an adult.
