Activity Snapshot
Activity description
Intermediate snowmobile drivers are welcome on this day-long expedition to Grønfjorden through narrow trails and large valleys, in an everchanging light!
The adventure begins with a pick-up at your accommodation in the direction of the base, to gear up and discover the snowmobiles. You will be provided with helmets and all the necessary thermal equipment to keep you safe and warm throughout the journey. Then, drivers will be shown the ropes of how to snowmobile, including the hand signals drivers need to learn to ensure a safe journey.
Finally, it will be time to set off into the vast abyss of Svalbard. The journey takes you southwestwards, in the direction of Grønfjorden. The route will include narrow passages between glaciers as well as moments of immense valleys offering stunning panoramas over the expansive, snow-covered tundra. The route you will borrow with your guide is inhabited by a number of Arctic animals, including the Svalbard reindeer, ptarmigan, and the well-camouflaged arctic fox. Keep an eye out for them as you skid through the icy terrain.
Once at the fjord, you will be able to explore the coast and frozen rivers. In the Springtime, the coastline is riddled with "ice pancakes" as the Arctic Ocean thaws, creating beautiful geometric patterns of white against the blue water. After an exploration on foot, during which your guide will teach you all about the geology and history of the area, you will enjoy lunch and hot drinks in this stunning landscape. Then, it will be time to drive the 68 km (42 miles) back home to Longyearbyen.
Svalbard Adventures recommends this long snowmobiling expedition to those with previous experience on a snowmobile, for the simple reasons that it is long, and some of the terrains are a little rough.
The reward for such a long snowmobiling excursion is the ability to experience the trail transform with the rising and setting sun. The changing light here creates entirely different moods, making the return journey feel like an entirely different route to the morning. After a day like this, you are sure to feel like a real Svarbardian!
