Activity description

With your experienced guide, you'll ride your own team of Alaskan Huskies for five days while camping in the Arctic wilderness.

Get ready for some long days, sleeping in tents, and hard work when you join this expedition! On many of the nights, you'll ride many ice-covered lakes which are ideal for ice fishing. The staff will bring the necessary equipment and hopefully you'll catch out on the dinner!

You'll have an unforgettable experience whilst traveling through a unique natural environment and once the journey is over you'll be a real musher!

Tove and Torkil, the owners of our center, are the main guides. Both of them are professional dog sled racers, Tove even holds with 21 starts in Finnmarksløpet the female world record, and is the 5th musher worldwide with more than 20 starts. For her participation in the Iditarod 2006, she received the "Most Inspirational Musher Award". Her son Torkil has been on the sled since he was 4 and received his first Top-10 placing in Finnmarksløpet last year.

Day 1: Arrival in Tromsø and pick up either at the airport or at your hotel. After 25 minutes you arrive at Tromsø Villmarkssenter where the guides and 200 Alaskan Huskies are waiting for you. You receive a full introduction to dog sledding and camping and meet the four dogs who will accompany you on your journey in the Norwegian wilderness. Then, you spend the night on reindeer skins in a Sami tent.

Day 2: After an early breakfast, you pack the equipment, sled, the dogs in the cars and drive towards Signaldalen in Norway. The ride takes approx. 2 hours. Here, you prepare your dog team and start the expedition towards Sweden and Finland. When you arrive at the camp you take the harness off the dogs and feed them before setting up your camp. This is going to be the routine every evening!

Day 3: After a good night of sleep, you have your breakfast in the tent before taking the camp down, packing the gear in your sledge, putting the harness on the dogs and going towards Sweden. You're in an area with high mountains and the route is decided depending on the weather, snow conditions and technical skill of the group. This area is known as the Lappland and is home to many herds of reindeer. You cross the border and settle down in Sweden.

Day 4: You ride in a high mountain terrain so it's very important to put on sunscreen. Even if the sun is not shinning there's a big chance that you get burned. You cross many large lakes known for fishing, and the camp is located by a fishing site.

Day 5: You start in the high mountains and then arrive in the woodlands where you experience some challenging and technical driving. You drive close to the Finish border and settle down on the Swedish or Finish side depending on the conditions of the day.

Day 6: The last day begins with many flat paths along a part of lakes. You have a lunch break where Norway, Sweden, and Finland meet before starting a tough climb and heading down a steep descent. After some easy kilometers, you are at the end of the expedition where the cars await you to bring you back to Tromsø in the evening. After that, you can choose to check-in at a hotel or sleep in the Sami tent at the center.

This day-to-day program depends on the weather and snow conditions and might change. The expedition leader will decide this prior to departure or as the conditions dictate.

This was a very well organised trip. Care was taken to ensure individuals we’re conversant with the issued equipment which was of the highest quality. We were allowed to develop our skills with both the actual activity and the preparation of both the dogs and our equipment, yet help was always on hand if needed. Despite some challenges with the weather conditions and the avalanche risk, 4 rising to 5, I always felt safe. There was excellent flexibility with the daily activities, fully taking account of the weather conditions and group and individual abilities. There were challenges which gave a real sense of achievement on completion.
