West Coast National Park: What to do when you get there ?

Exotic fauna and lush flora is the signature of West Coast National Park. Located only 75 miles north of Cape Town, this national park is guaranteed to satisfy even the most demanding of nature lovers.

West Coast is the perfect environment to get close to Mother Nature and explore South Africa’s sumptuous surroundings. The park proposes a wide range of activities from trekking and mountain biking to sea kayaking and kitesurfing in the Laangebaan Lagoon.

Those of you looking to get your full of unusual wildlife are in for a treat! West Coast National Park is home to large antelope such as eland, red hartebeest, bontebok, kudu, gemsbok, steenbok, mountain zebra, duiker and ostriches in the Postberg section. Smaller animals include the bat-eared fox, caracal, and Cape grey mongoose.

Hire an experienced guide and follow Eve’s footprints by taking part in the 30 km hike. During your outing, not only can you explore the trail that was supposedly carved out 117,000 years ago by a young woman called Eve, but you can also find out more about the local culture and traditions thanks to the expertise of your local guide. Alternatively you can also explore the Bakoor Trail, Strandveld Trail and the Steenbok Trail.

Mountain biking lovers can venture out on the 13km Green Trail that starts at the Langebaan gate and crosses the Seeberg Bird Hide before heading back to the gate. If you’d like to try something longer, you can try the 17km Red Trail, which is similar to the Green route, but goes to the Seeberg Lookout and then to Mooimaak before heading back to the Langebaan gate.

In the centre of the national park, you’ll find the beautiful clear waters of the Langebaan Lagoon. The lagoon is divided into 3 recreational zones, with different activities and facilities in each. Zone A is the most multi-functional section and is reserved for most water sport activities. Zone B is dedicated to welcoming sailboats and board sailing (no power boats or angling) and Zone C is the wilderness area, which is unfortunately closed to the public.

For those of you who’d like to discover the Laangebaan Lagoon’s turquoise coloured waters can book a sea kayaking excursion with Gravity. Gravity is an outdoor adventure activity centre that has exclusive rights to operate commercial sea kayaking trips in the beautiful West Coast National Park. With the jewel-like lagoon as its centrepiece, the park offers water sports fans something unique and mesmerising.

Stunning bird life, magnificent scenery, excellent local seafood and exciting fishing are just some of the elements that make the ‘weskus’ so special.
