This activity is run & operated from Wanaka Marina. Mou Waho Island is a protected nature reserve in Lake Wanaka accessible only by boat – a 15km boat ride and 20-minute hike are used to reach Arethusa Pool.
Meet at the marina in Wanaka for this scenic cruise to Mou Waho Island on Lake Wanaka. A remote and beautiful island, its rocky outcrop, secluded beaches and unique birdlife all come second to the unique Arethusa Pool aka “island on a lake, on an island on a lake on an island on the sea”. A two-hour tour, travel by water taxi up the lake and enjoy the views of the Harris and Buchannan mountains – learning more about the area’s fascinating geology. After disembarking at the small jetty, a 20-minute self guided hike brings you to the hidden lake, created by glacial action thousands of years ago when large glaciers filled the valley. Travelling to the summit of Tyrwhitt Peak, the view opens up to reveal both lakes - putting the natural illusion into perspective. Returning to the shoreline, the last thing to tick off your list is to observe the Weka that calls this reserve home – a flightless bird with a cheeky character!
A 15 km guided water taxi and hike, guests should come prepared with suitable walking shoes and comfortable clothing. During summer, swimwear and a towel are advised for swimming in Lake Wanaka.
Stay for 1.5 hours on the island before heading back to shore, or go in the morning and spend the day as you please before catching the afternoon taxi home.
