Take part in Iceland’s top-rated snorkelling adventure in the heart of Þingvellir National Park: snorkelling in the Silfra rift. Located less than an hour’s drive from Reykjavík, this unique underwater journey lets you float directly between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
The day begins with a convenient pickup in Reykjavík. During the one-hour transfer to Þingvellir National Park, your guide will share insights about Iceland’s fascinating geology, culture, and the history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Upon arrival at Silfra, participants will form small groups (maximum 6 snorkellers per guide) to ensure a safe, personalized experience.
After a detailed safety briefing and overview of the snorkelling route, you’ll gear up in a heated van with a drysuit, mask, snorkel, fins, hood, and gloves. Once suited up, a short walk brings you to the entry platform, where you’ll begin your guided tour through the four iconic sections of Silfra. Over the course of 30 to 45 minutes, you’ll float through Big Crack, the narrowest point where the tectonic plates almost touch, then glide into Silfra Hall, famous for its surreal colours and up to 150 metres of visibility. As you reach Silfra Cathedral, you’ll hover over a 23-meter drop, before concluding in the wide, crystal-clear waters of Silfra Lagoon.
Despite the chilly water temperature (between 2°C and 4°C), your drysuit keeps you insulated, allowing you to fully enjoy this otherworldly environment. After exiting the water and walking back to the van (250 meters), you’ll return your gear and warm up with hot chocolate and cookies during a friendly debrief with your guide.
Snorkelling in Silfra is an unforgettable experience for confident swimmers looking to explore Iceland’s glacial waters in a truly exceptional setting. Book now for a guided snorkelling trip from Reykjavík that dives into the heart of Iceland’s natural wonders.
And for even more fun, if you can meet the guide directly at Thingvellir National Park (Þingvellir), why not opt for the experience combining snorkelling at Silfra with a relaxing moment at the Laugarvatn hot springs?
