Activity description

Be left speechless on this glacier hiking tour in Skaftafell National Park.

An excursion where getting there is half the fun, explore Europe's largest glacier on this guided hike to  Falljökull - The Falling Glacier in Skaftafell National Park. Combining arresting landscapes with challenging terrain, traverse the deep crevasses, pale moulins and even ice sculptures - learning about the mysterious nature and geology of Iceland on this scenic glacier hiking tour.

This tour is run & operated from Skaftafell Terminal Tour Center by the main road. Driving time to Skaftafell from Reykjavík is around 4 hours and 30 minutes. If you arrive early, you can visit Skaftafell Terminal Tour Center which offers free parking and has restrooms.

Meet your guide in Skaftafell for this half-day guided hiking tour in Skaftafell National Park. The perfect experience for curious beginners and seasoned mountaineers alike, explore the hidden area's of Europe's largest glacier - navigating dramatic ice formations along the Vatnajökull glacial tongue to Falljökull. After a short safety briefing and kit breakdown with your guide, travel to the frontier of the glacier and warm up with an easy hike to the ice cap. After fitting your crampons, walk in formation across the undulating and ever-changing landscape to the 'Falling Glacier' appreciating the sheer size and scale of this enormous ice formation. Climbing high for the best vistas across Skaftafell National Park, your guide will be on hand to tell you more about the formation, topography and current threats to Iceland's iconic glaciers. Returning back to your return transport, there's just enough time to visit some of the area's famous film locations - seen in cult series like Game of Thrones, Batman and more!

This is considered a moderate activity for anyone of reasonable physical fitness. Along with the basics of ice climbing (crampons & ice axes), you will also have the chance to learn more intermediate techniques of glacier hiking such as via ferrata, rope work and crevasse rescue.

We did a glacier tour. Since it was winter, we were the only ones on the tour. Our guide took us almost all the way up to where there was literally no one. The feeling of being alone on a glacier was just great!

Amazing Glacier and Guide

I am glad that I opted for a longer glacier hike. It allowed for a more in depth experience on the glacier to see more features and spend more time on it. Incredibly gorgeous with the winter time golden hour lighting

Amazing experience
