About the activity

Glacier hiking is an absolute must-do activity in Iceland, especially on one of the glacier tongues of the country’s largest ice cap, Vatnajökull. And to do so, all you need is to join one of the local Icelandic Mountain Guides near Svínafellsjökull to start your glacier hike from Skaftafell, far from the busy tourist areas.

Fully equipped with all the necessary gear for this winter activity, you’ll enjoy your glacier hike on Svínafellsjökull in a quiet, remote area where you can truly appreciate the vastness and serenity of the surroundings. Your guide will share their extensive knowledge of this extraordinary environment, where you’ll do your best to leave as little trace as possible — preserving these frozen natural landscapes is essential, as they form an important part of Iceland’s natural heritage.

You can choose between two options for your glacier hike on Svínafellsjökull:

  • Blue Ice Experience: the perfect option for a short 1.5–2-hour hike, suitable from age 10. If you choose this tour, you’ll approach the glacier in a massive truck specially designed to handle the rugged terrain of the area.
  • Glacier Adventure: a more challenging option, suitable from age 14, allowing you to go farther and explore the glacier in greater detail during a roughly 3.5-hour hike.

So pick the option that suits you best and take the time to explore — with the utmost respect — one of the glacier tongues of the vast Vatnajökull by setting out on a glacier hike from Skaftafell on Svínafellsjökull!

The glacier walk was absolutely amazing! With our small group of four people we came very far up. You should definitively see the glacier ice and have this experience if you go to Iceland!
