Course of events
The total duration of the activity can vary from 3.5 to 4 hours.
- Arrive at the starting point in Skaftafell 20 minutes before the activity start time
- Meet the guide
- Receive glacier equipment (harness, ice axe, helmet and crampons) and safety briefing
- Hike to the glacier while your guide teaches you about glaciers and ice caves (about 30 minutes)
- Explore the ice caves of Svínafellsjökull Glacier (approximately 2 hours)
- End off with a view of low land, sandy beach by the Atlantic Ocean in the distance
- Hike back to the meeting point (30 minutes)
- Arrive back to the original starting point in Skaftafell
Activity requirements
Hiking shoes must be worn: it will not be possible to attach the crampons required for this activity to other types of shoes.
Please arrive 20 minutes before the departure time. The Welcome Centre in Skaftafell is located in the heart of the camping site, right next to the service center.
Special terms
The minimum shoe size available is european 34 (U.S. - 2.5).
Participation during pregnancy is at the guide’s discretion on the day of the tour, based on real-time conditions.

Your safety is the first priority so sometimes the tour may be canceled with short notice due to weather conditions or safety concerns.
