Activity description

Experience the beautiful Arctic night while snowshoeing beneath the magical Northern Lights on this excursion in Kiruna. Welcoming participants from ages 3 and up on this family-friendly adventure!

Kiruna is a town situated in the north of Sweden, right within the Arctic Circle. The town is part of the Lapland region, a popular winter destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Due to the Arctic conditions, Kiruna experiences snowy winters with long, dark nights. Due to its northern position, it is also one of the best places in the world for witnessing the mesmerising Northern Lights!

You will begin by meeting your experienced guide at the starting point in Kiruna. They will go through a safety briefing and itinerary for the evening. No prior snowshoeing or hiking experience is necessary, all levels are welcome! After receiving your snowshoeing equipment (snowshoes and poles) and your Arctic clothing, you are ready for your nighttime excursion.

Following the experienced guide, you will set off on an easy trail up the Kurravaara mountain in the region. While snowshoeing over the glistening white snow beneath the light from the stars and moon, you will discover Sweden's most distinct wilderness. If luck is on your side, the dance of the amazing Aurora Borealis will also appear in the sky above you. In this remote area away from light pollution, the chances of witnessing the beautiful colours is high.

Once you've reached the top of the mountain, you'll enjoy a break with some hot tea or coffee and sandwiches while you take in the stunning views of the Torne River valley below. You might even spot some of the native wildlife or their tracks, such as moose, reindeer, foxes, and hares. While you continue to admire the Northern Lights, the guide will share stories about the natural phenomenon and insights about the history of this Arctic location. After the break, you will snowshoe back to Kiruna through the peaceful forest.

This evening snowshoeing excursion is an enjoyable outing for everyone to experience the natural beauty of Swedish Lapland and the awe-inspiring Northern Lights from Kiruna!

Incredible experience, we saw a fascinating aurora. We walked a little less, but because the eyes were always looking at the sky. The staff was friendly and prepared.
