Stockholm, often called the “Venice of the North,” is a city shaped by water, where the Baltic Sea weaves through an archipelago of over 30,000 islands, islets and skerries. Sea kayaking in Stockholm offers a unique perspective on this Scandinavian capital, blending urban vibrancy with untouched nature. Paddling here, you glide past centuries-old facades of Gamla Stan, slip beneath elegant bridges, and venture into tranquil bays where the city’s pulse fades into the gentle rhythm of waves. The interplay of light on the water, the scent of brackish sea air, and the ever-changing skyline create an atmosphere both invigorating and serene. From the historic heart of Stockholm to the wild edges of the archipelago, every route reveals a new facet of Sweden’s maritime heritage.

Embarking on a sea kayaking adventure in Stockholm is an immersive journey through contrasting landscapes. Routes often begin in central districts such as Södermalm or Djurgården, where colourful wooden houses and leafy parks line the waterfront. As you paddle eastward, the cityscape gradually gives way to the rocky outcrops and pine forests of the inner archipelago, with islands like Fjäderholmarna and Vaxholm offering inviting stops. The water’s surface shifts from the gentle ripples of sheltered canals to the open expanses of the Baltic, where the breeze carries the calls of seabirds and the tang of salt. Depending on the chosen itinerary, excursions can last from a couple of hours to full-day explorations, with options for both leisurely sightseeing and more challenging crossings. The sensation of gliding silently across clear, cool water, with the city’s spires behind and the wild archipelago ahead, is both grounding and exhilarating.

Local guides in Stockholm are passionate outdoor professionals, deeply familiar with the region’s waterways, weather patterns and maritime traditions. They provide high-quality sea kayaks, paddles, buoyancy aids and all necessary safety equipment, ensuring a secure and comfortable experience for every participant. Briefings cover paddling techniques, navigation and local conditions, while guides remain attentive throughout the journey, adapting routes to suit the group’s abilities and the day’s weather. Swedish outdoor culture, known as “friluftsliv,” places a strong emphasis on respect for nature and safety, and this ethos is reflected in every aspect of the experience. Logistics are straightforward, with easy access to launch points by public transport or ferry, and clear communication from instructors before and during the activity.

Sea kayaking in Stockholm is accessible to a wide range of participants, from first-time paddlers to experienced adventurers. Most excursions require only basic fitness and a willingness to engage with the elements, though longer or more exposed routes may demand greater stamina and confidence on the water. The prime season runs from late spring through early autumn, when daylight lingers into the evening and the archipelago bursts into life with wildflowers and bird calls. Families, solo travellers, couples and groups all find their place on the water, whether seeking a peaceful escape, an active challenge or a new perspective on the city’s maritime soul.

To discover Stockholm by sea kayak is to experience the city’s true essence—where urban life and wild nature meet on shimmering water. Let Manawa connect you with expert guides and unforgettable routes, and unlock the freedom of paddling through one of Europe’s most captivating archipelagos.

This is the way to travel- Sault & Thigo were thorough in setting us up for the trip, showing us how to prepare the kayaks (& ourselves:) & explaining the safety issues. Then, on the water, they pointed out all the birds we were seeing - e.g., geese, eider duck, plummeting terns. I loved it from start to finish. On the wooded island we stopped at, they made us a lovely lunch of cheesey pies & salad, drinks & dessert if you wanted it. Some of us even took a wee dunk in the sea, which was properly invigorating (as you might expect from the Baltic:) & so ensured a power-paddle back to Dalabro, the starting point. The only downer was that it ended! I would love to do a multi-day trip.
