When winter transforms Stockholm into a city of shimmering white, ice skating becomes one of the most captivating ways to explore Sweden’s capital and its surrounding landscapes. Stockholm, spread across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea, offers a rare blend of urban sophistication and untouched Nordic wilderness. Here, centuries-old architecture rises above frozen waterways, and the low winter sun casts long golden reflections across the ice. From the historic heart of Gamla Stan to the tranquil inlets of Djurgården and the vast, open stretches of Brunnsviken, skating in Stockholm is more than a sport—it is a journey through a living winter postcard, where the crisp air carries the scent of pine and woodsmoke, and the silence is broken only by the rhythmic sound of blades gliding over natural ice.

Practising ice skating in Stockholm is a dynamic and immersive experience. Local routes often follow the winding paths of frozen lakes and archipelago bays, with popular circuits on Lake Mälaren, Edsviken, and the canals around Kungsholmen. Depending on the conditions, outings can last from a gentle hour to a full day’s adventure, covering several kilometres of pristine ice. The sensation is both exhilarating and meditative: the surface can shift from glassy smoothness to textured, wind-sculpted patterns, while the light changes from pale morning blue to the warm glow of afternoon. Some stretches offer peaceful solitude, where only the distant call of seabirds interrupts the quiet, while others come alive with fellow skaters and the laughter of families. The landscape is ever-changing, with islands, forests, and city skylines providing a constant backdrop.

Safety and expertise are central to Stockholm’s outdoor culture, and local guides bring a wealth of knowledge to every excursion. Professional instructors ensure that all participants are equipped with high-quality skates, helmets, and essential safety gear such as ice claws and throw lines. Before setting out, guides assess ice conditions, weather, and route accessibility, drawing on years of experience in Nordic skating. The emphasis on safety is matched by a welcoming approach—guides share insights into local traditions, wildlife, and the best spots for a warming break with hot chocolate or coffee. Logistics are seamless, with meeting points easily accessible from central Stockholm or nearby towns like Solna and Lidingö, making it simple to join a tour whether you are visiting for a day or a week.

The prime season for ice skating in Stockholm runs from late December to early March, when temperatures are reliably below freezing and the ice reaches optimal thickness. While many routes are suitable for beginners, a reasonable level of fitness and balance is recommended, as natural ice can be unpredictable and outings may involve several hours of activity. Experienced skaters will find plenty of challenges, from longer expeditions across the archipelago to technical sections with changing ice conditions. Families, groups of friends, and solo travellers are all welcome, with guides adapting each outing to the group’s abilities and interests. The accessibility of Stockholm’s lakes and the city’s efficient transport make it easy for visitors of all backgrounds to experience this quintessential Swedish pastime.

To skate on natural ice in Stockholm is to discover the city from a new perspective, moving effortlessly between urban landmarks and wild Nordic scenery. Whether you are seeking adventure, tranquillity, or a unique way to connect with Swedish culture, ice skating here offers an unforgettable blend of beauty and authenticity. Book your Stockholm ice skating experience with Manawa and let the frozen waterways lead you into the heart of Scandinavia’s winter magic.

This is the way to travel- Sault & Thigo were thorough in setting us up for the trip, showing us how to prepare the kayaks (& ourselves:) & explaining the safety issues. Then, on the water, they pointed out all the birds we were seeing - e.g., geese, eider duck, plummeting terns. I loved it from start to finish. On the wooded island we stopped at, they made us a lovely lunch of cheesey pies & salad, drinks & dessert if you wanted it. Some of us even took a wee dunk in the sea, which was properly invigorating (as you might expect from the Baltic:) & so ensured a power-paddle back to Dalabro, the starting point. The only downer was that it ended! I would love to do a multi-day trip.
