Make a journey into the wild and captivating side of Crete. Agiofarago and Matala are located in the south of the prefecture of Heraklion. The contrast between the two makes this off-road excursion special. On one side you can find the quiet, spiritual Agiofarago with its wild beauty and on the other, the noisy Matala with their hippie style!

Your 4x4 driving adventure towards Agiofarago will lead you to many interesting spots and several amazing hidden gems along the route. Your way takes you through the plain of Messara, the production site of one famous Greek olive oil and the homeland of the indigenous Messara horse. Your tour group will make a stop in the traditional village of Siva to enjoy a drink or get the essentials for the rest of the day. A short distance from Siva hides the charming Odigitria Monastery between the surrounding idyllic hills. This is one of the most important monasteries in Crete, built in the 14th century. Once you arrive in Agiofarago, or the gorge of the Saints, you will leave your four-wheel drive at the parking lot and continue on foot. Your group will follow the path crossing this magnificent gorge, scattered with imposing oleanders and olives until you reach the beautiful beach and the Libyan Sea, inviting you to enjoy a swim and refresh yourself.

Later you will return to the car and head to Matala. A small but crowded village, with a wonderful 300m long sandy beach and crystal-clear deep waters. The village became famous for the carved Roman tombs and the hippies of the ’70s, who lived in them! Here you will have a swim at the beach and later, lunch in a traditional local tavern.

From golden sand beaches, over dusty red hills and green olive fields to the blue ocean - the different shades of colours decorating the off-road route will surely amaze you!
