The Sarakina Gorge in the southeast of Crete offers unique river trekking with beautiful waterfalls and ponds and a mythical history. Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity, suitable for all experience levels!
The Sarakina gorge is located at the southeast Crete, 17 km (10.6 miles) from Ierapetra, near the small village of Mithi. It is not long but according to the visitors, it is the easiest and nicest. According to the myth, the giant Sarantapichos, stopped once to drink water from the river Myrtos, and his long beard, slashed the mountain in two, and the gorge was formed.
Its length is about 1.5 km (0.6 miles) and the width varies between 3 and 10 meters (10 to 33 feet), only at a few points it widens more. The height of the walls is approximately 150 m (492 feet). The river of Kriopotamos flows through the gorge all year round, and forms beautiful waterfalls and ponds, ideal for swimming in the summer. At some points where the terrain is challenging, there are steps carved in the rocks and some tree trunks serve as ladders.
