Discover the world of scuba diving in Santo Antão from Porto Novo: you will take part in the 3-hour SSI Try Scuba programme, which includes a short theory session on the basics of scuba diving, an introductory session in the pool (around 1 hour), and a first dive from Curraletes beach (around 20 minutes immersion to a maximum depth of 5 metres).
Please allow around 3 hours in total for your visit.
- Welcome at the diving centre in Porto Novo
- Administrative formalities, including a briefing on the course of the activity
- Theoretical session on the basics of scuba diving
- Preparation of your diving equipment
- Practical session on the basics of scuba diving in the centre's pool (approx. 1 hour)
- 10-minute van transfer to the boat at the port
- Pre-dive safety briefing with one instructor per diver
- Launch for around 20 minutes, to a maximum depth of 5 metres
- Back to the beach with a debriefing of the activity
- Transfer back to the dive centre, equipment storage and end of the activity (showers and toilets available at the centre)
All participants must know how to swim to take part in this activity.
Written parental authorisation is required for minors to participate in this activity.
This activity is not accessible to pregnant people or disabled people.

Practical information
If you would like to try scuba diving in Cape Verde, but are apprehensive about the idea of getting straight into the water from a boat, this introduction to scuba diving in Santo Antão is for you. Called Try Scuba, this short 3-hour SSI (Scuba Schools International) course will give you a gentle introduction to the world of scuba diving thanks to its 3-part structure: the first part is devoted to theory on the basics of diving, the second is designed to give you a chance to practise the basics in the centre's pool (around 1 hour), and the final part includes your first dive from the shore (boat possible under certain conditions). You will have plenty of time to assimilate the instructors' instructions before taking to the water in the Atlantic Ocean!
Weather permitting, your first dive in Santo Antão will take place from Curraletes Beach to the east of Porto Novo. You will dive for around 20 minutes, to a maximum depth of 5 metres, alongside a dedicated instructor (1 instructor for 1 diver). Once below the surface, you will have the pleasure of experiencing the amazing effects of scuba diving, facing an exceptional volcanic landscape with a wealth of flora and fauna. If you are lucky, you may even come across a sea turtle, the emblematic animal of Cape Verde, in addition to the many fish present in these crystal-clear waters at between 23 and 28°C!
Ideal for those who want to take their time and learn to dive, this introduction to diving in Santo Antão is accessible to both absolute beginners and those who have already completed a first dive. So if you want to dive in Cape Verde, but don't have a certification, this SSI Try Scuba experience is for you!
