Leave the snow-covered shores behind and step into a vast desert of solid white as you embark on a frozen sea voyage through the winter wilderness of Lapland! Come aboard on an impressive icebreaker ship for a day on the frozen Bothnian sea. Built in 1976, the Polar Explorer was specially conceived to break through impressively thick ice in Arctic waters; during this trip, you will get to experience the full extent of its motor as it crushes its way into the water.
This tour is scheduled with a pick-up from Kemi and a scenic drive to the terminal in the Swedish Lapland. Your journey aboard this legendary industrial ship is designed as an educational and sensory immersion into arctic work. Guided by a live English-speaking guide and a specialized audio app available in 16 languages, you will explore the inner workings of the ship, wandering from the rumbling machinery of the engine room straight to the command center on the Captain's bridge.
The highlight of the navigation is undoubtedly the resonant crackling and crushing of thick sea ice as the massive hull effortlessly cuts its path forward. When the ship comes to a halt in the middle of the frozen sea, you will experience a moment of profound silence before gearing up for the ultimate polar thrill: safely floating in the subzero water inside a professional thermal survival suit, surrounded by blocks of broken ice!
This arctic adventure is accessible to everyone, with all safety equipment being provided on board, and the specialized flotation suits are engineered to keep you warm, dry, and effortlessly buoyant without requiring any swimming experience. As you traverse back to Kemi, you may relax by the cozy heated lounges, and enjoy some snacks or meals on board the cafeteria at your own expense.
Whether you choose to walk directly on the solid sea ice or plunge into the freezing water, this experience is set to leave you in awe! Book your Icebreaker Cruise and Ice floating in the Arctic Sea from Kemi, today!
