Since 2002, French Polynesia has become one of the world's largest sanctuaries for marine mammals. Numerous species of cetaceans can be found in Polynesian waters, including bottlenose and spinner dolphins, short-finned pilot whales, humpback whales and sperm whales. Humpback whales, otherwise known as megaptera whales, spend the austral winter in Polynesian waters, and can be seen from August to November. They come to Polynesia to spend the winter in warm waters, resting, socialising, breeding and giving birth.
After leaving the marina to board the 15m Mori Ora sailboat, you'll leave the magnificent Opunohu Bay to enter the ocean and take in the view of Moorea's vivid coastline. It's in this breathtaking environment that the tour will set off in search of these marine mammals in their natural habitat over the next 5 to 6 hours.
As far as possible, the tour will be by sail to ensure a gentle approach. Observation will take place from the boat (no launching), to let the animals rest and interact with each other without the presence of humans. The excursion, a little longer than the local average, leaves plenty of time to find, observe and approach these giants of the ocean gently and respectfully. A marine biologist or naturalist guide will also be on board to tell you all about these magical creatures and answer any questions you may have.
