Learn about Greenland’s fascinating history on an informative and scenic boat tour to the Knud Rasmussen Glacier from Tasiilaq!

Tasiilaq is a large town situated on Ammassalik Island in Eastern Greenland. The town is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, with unique fjord, mountains and icebergs. On this 8-hour boat tour, you’ll witness some of the region’s mesmerising glaciers and icebergs up close!

The adventure begins at the starting point at Tasiilaq Harbour. You’ll be greeted on board the comfortable boat by the experienced guide. Then, the skipper will set sail, heading northwest into the broad Ammassalik Fjord. The journey will take you to more narrow and steep fjords, as you pass by breathtaking views of the mountain peaks in the distance.

Next, you’ll arrive at the remnants of an old World War II airbase, known today as Ikateq. During World War II, the United States established an airbase in Ikateq, called Bluie East Two. This airbase was part of the network of bases used for transatlantic air ferry routes and weather stations. After the war, the airbase and the settlement were abandoned, leaving behind remnants of military structures and equipment.

You’ll stop at Ikateq and walk among authentic remains and scrap dating back to the 1940s, including rusted fuel drums, broken-down vehicles and windswept ruins. The boat trip then continues along the Sermiligaaq Fjord. You’ll be surrounded by majestic mountain peaks and beautiful icebergs. Then, you’ll have a view of two calving glaciers, the Karale Glacier and the Knud Rasmussen Glacier.

Upon arrival at the Knud Rasmussen Glacier, you’ll go ashore and enjoy a delicious lunch in this tranquil environment. The glacier is named after the famous Danish-Greenlandic polar explorer Knud Rasmussen and is surrounded by typical Greenlandic landscapes, including mountains and fjords. If time permits, you’ll have 1-2 hours to explore this area on your own, before returning to the boat and sailing back to the starting point in Tasiilaq.
