Being in good physical condition is required to take part in this activity. You should be able to:
- Hike 1 km to the glacier front, carrying a 10 kg backpack
- Hike 2 km across the glacier (uneven terrain) carrying a 10 kg backpack
- Paddle 8 km flatwater (with at least one long break).
The maximum weight to participate in this activity is 120 kg (260 lbs).
You don't need to have kayaking experience to participate in this activity, but you will need to compensate by utilizing more physical effort during the tour.
This activity is not recommended for pregnant or disabled people.
Please note that the duration and itinerary of the activity are weather-dependent.
The clothes you bring must be suitable for hiking and kayaking. You should bring warm clothing that is not too bulky, so it can fit under your drysuit comfortably. You can bring an extra layer (fleece, wool, or puffy jacket) to use during the kayaking section, which will be colder than the hike.

On the day of your full-day kayak adventure and glacier hike in Jökulsárlón, you'll need to arrive at the meeting point at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon car park at least 15 minutes before your departure time. There, you'll meet the knowledgeable instructor who will accompany you throughout this whole experience. They'll explain the itinerary for the day, explain the safety measures you'll need to follow, and distribute the equipment you'll use, including a backpack where you'll keep the packraft (kayak) and paddle, crampons, and other safety equipment for the hike.
Once you're ready to go, your full-day kayak adventure and glacier hike in Jökulsárlón will begin with a 30-minute 4x4 ride over to the starting point of the hike. You'll then hike for 30 minutes (approx. 1 km) to reach the front of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Next, you'll hike across the glacier for around 45 minutes (approx. 2 km) and reach one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Iceland: the calving face of Breiðamerkurjökull. You'll have some time to rest and observe the beautiful landscape before continuing the activity!
When you've regained your strength, you'll continue your full-day kayak adventure and glacier hike in Jökulsárlón by inflating your boat and receiving some kayaking instructions from your expert guide. You'll also add an extra layer of clothing (if you brought it) and put on the drysuit that you'll find in your backpack. Once everyone is onboard, you'll set off! You'll spend around 3 hours (approx. 8 km) paddling along the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, with a couple of breaks to rest and eat something. You'll finish the activity right where you started it and return all the equipment to your instructor.
