Watching the cliffs of Malta ablaze in the golden light of late afternoon is a magical spectacle — and one that is best enjoyed from the sea. Nestled at the heart of the Maltese archipelago, the wild islet of Comino is home to unspoilt coves and mysterious cavities that are utterly transformed as the sun starts to set. The team at Comino Land Charters invites you to enjoy a privileged experience aboard their intimate vessel on a sunset boat excursion to Comino from Mellieħa. Limited to just 24 passengers, this small-group outing led by a local captain with 15 years of experience keeps you well away from the crowds of larger boats, offering a true sense of escape out at sea.
The voyage begins as you follow the rocky coastline while the sun starts its descent. The first stop — lasting 45 minutes — takes you to the Crystal Lagoon, celebrated for the clarity of its waters. Thanks to the compact size of the boat, your skipper can navigate right up close to the cliff walls and venture directly inside the sea caves — a privilege out of reach for larger vessels. You can take a dip in the translucent water for a snorkelling session using the masks and snorkels available on board, or explore the rocky walls by stand-up paddleboard as the first golden reflections begin to light up the site.
The boat then sets course for the legendary Blue Lagoon for an extended stop of over an hour. At this later hour, Malta's most coveted spot regains its calm and serenity. You can swim in this natural pool bathed in low, golden light, or simply relax on deck and soak up the sunset. The journey continues northwards to Santa Marija Bay — a secluded and peaceful cove. Pool noodles and stand-up paddle equipment are on hand to extend the relaxation in this wild setting before the sun slips below the horizon.
On the return journey, you'll pass in front of the impressive Santa Maria Caves and Elephant Rock — two of the archipelago's most spectacular geological formations, providing the perfect backdrop for some memorable photographs. Open to anyone aged 2 and above, this contemplative outing is ideal for a memorable moment with family or friends. The boat is fully equipped for passenger comfort, including on-board toilets.
