Your expert Arctic Footsteps instructor will take you to the starting point of the activity and explain the day's itinerary, as well as a few safety recommendations to follow. They'll distribute helmets and any other safety equipment necessary before the activity starts.
You'll hop on a snowmobile as a passenger, with an expert at the wheel, and go! You'll explore the breathtaking, snow-covered landscapes of Svalbard as you head toward the ice cave. You'll have the chance to observe reindeer and arctic foxes, as well as diverse Arctic birds on your way. When you arrive at the glacier, you'll step off the snowmobile and follow your instructor into a cave made completely out of ice, formed by centuries of flowing meltwater and shifting ice. You'll explore the cave carefully, accompanied by your instructor at all times, and learn about the glacier systems, the surrounding terrain, and life in this extreme weather.
Keep in mind that the temperatures in the Arctic can vary between 5 and -30 degrees Celsius, and this activity does not include winter outerwear. This is why you should come prepared with a thermal or wool underlayer, fleece or wool mid layers, and windproof and waterproof outerwear (jacket and pants). You should also bring winter boots with a good grip, insulated gloves, a scarf, and sunglasses to avoid the sunlight's reflection on the snow, as well as anything else you may need (medication, extra snacks, etc.) to spend between 3 to 4 hours on this snowmobile excursion from Longyearbyen.
