Activity requirements
No climbing experience is needed to participate in this activity, but an above-average physical condition is needed to go ice climbing. Your instructor will tailor the experience to your climbing level, but you need to be in good shape.
As per Svalbard law, to drive a snowmobile, you must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid, class B driver's license. All drivers must bring a physical copy of their driver's license. Participants who don't fulfil these requirements can ride as passengers on the snowmobile.
All participants must be able to fully communicate in English or Norwegian for safety reasons. If that's not possible, at least one member of your group must be fluent in one of these languages.
All minors must be accompanied by an adult.
A minimum of 2 participants is necessary to run this activity. If this requirement is not fulfilled, your instructor will try to reschedule your activity or provide a full refund.

This activity is not recommended for pregnant or disabled people, nor for those with back problems.

On the day of your ice climbing and snowmobile adventure around in Svalbard, your Backyard Svalbard instructor will pick you up at your accommodations in Longyearbyen. They'll drive you toward the starting point of the experience and distribute the helmet, thermal suit, and riding boots that you'll need to ride the snowmobile. After a thorough safety briefing with a clear itinerary breakdown, you'll get a quick lesson on how to drive the snowmobile to stay safe and ride to the right place. And once you're all geared up and ready to go, you'll set off!
You'll ride over the stunning landscapes of the Arctic, enjoying the region's crisp air and the adrenaline of the speed on the snowmobile. Once you arrive at the climbing spot, you'll take a break to warm up and have some lunch to regain your strength before the challenging part begins. Your instructor will distribute the ice axes, crampons, ropes, harnesses, and carabiners needed to climb the ice wall before you, and explain exactly how the activity works if you're a beginner, or give you special tips if you are an experienced climber. Next, it's time to climb! You'll enjoy the challenge of ascending the ice wall with your expert instructor keeping you safe and giving you advice to succeed. Once you descend, it will be time to remount your snowmobile, and return to Longyearbyen for the end of the experience.
To participate in this wonderful 7-hour ice climbing and snowmobile adventure around Longyearbyen, you must have excellent physical condition, since you will have to endure the cold and physical effort of driving the snowmobile, as well as be able to climb the ice wall. You should also come prepared with a wind and waterproof jacket and pants, thermal underlayers, a hat, a buff, gloves, mountaineering boots (your instructor can rent you some if you don't have them), a water bottle, and anything else you might need (medications, extra snacks, etc.) to have a good time out in the Arctic temperatures of Svalbard.
