About the activity
Explore the incredible Arctic landscapes and historic neighbourhoods of a beautiful Norwegian town on this wonderful mountain bike excursion through Longyearbyen in Svalbard! Longyearbyen is an old coal-mining town, and the world's northernmost settlement with a population of over 1000 people. It is the largest settled area of Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago located between the mainland and the North Pole. The region is home to diverse Arctic wildlife such as polar bears, reindeer, and Arctic foxes, and it is the location of the Global Seed Vault, a secure facility that protects the world's crop diversity by storing seeds from around the world.
On the day of your biking excursion around Longyearbyen, your expert Arctic Footsteps instructor will pick you up from your accommodations in Longyearbyen (please check special terms and specify where). They'll take you to the starting point of the experience and help you find a bike that fits you well. They'll distribute safety equipment and informyou of the itinerary for the day, as well as a few safety recommendations to follow.
Once everyone is geared up, it's time to start pedalling! You'll explore historical neighbourhoods with restaurants and cafés, and your expert historian instructor will tell you all about the town's social life, its important historic landmarks, and much more. This tour will also take you around beautiful natural landscapes, including historic mining sites, panoramic viewpoints overlooking Adventfjorden, rivers, scenic routes, and more. You'll stop to have a delicious hot drink at a local café, and lastly, you'll head to the Global Seed Vault, to observe it from the outside (entrance is not included in the tour), understand how it works, and what is inside it. You'll return to your accommodations with wonderful memories of a unique town and knowledge of life in the Arctic.
Keep in mind that the temperatures in the Arctic can vary between 5 and -30 degrees Celsius, and this activity does not include winter outerwear. This is why you should come prepared with comfortable clothing adapted to the weather conditions of the day, and if you visit during the winter, you shold bring a thermal or wool underlayer, fleece or wool mid layers, and windproof and waterproof outerwear (jacket and pants). You should also bring winter boots with a good grip, insulated gloves, a scarf, and sunglasses to protect against the sunlight's reflection on the snow, as well as any other essentials you may need (such as medication or extra snacks) to spend around 4 hours on this biking tour in Longyearbyen.
