Rising high above the coastal town of Svolvær, guided rock climbing on Svolværgeita in Lofoten offers an iconic vertical journey onto one of Norway’s most famous granite summits. On 1 August 1910, Ferdinand Schjelderup, Alf Bonnevie Bryn, and Carl Wilhelm Rubenson made the first recorded ascent of Svolværgeita, a landmark moment that established Lofoten as a premier destination for rock climbing. Reaching the iconic twin horns of "The Goat" remains a classic mountain objective, where crisp arctic air and historic granite combine to create a remarkable alpine setting high above the fjords.
The outing starts at the trailhead near Svolvær with a forty-minute approach hike along the Sherpa steps, warming up your legs as you ascend toward the base of the rock face. Upon arrival at the wall, your certified climbing guide equips you with all necessary technical equipment provided by TRAD, including a harness, helmet, and safety gear, followed by a thorough safety briefing. You will then embark on a classic two-pitch climbing route up the 150-meter granite formation, which sits 356 meters above sea level on the south-west side of Fløyfjellet. Progression relies on natural holds and steady foot placement, with small groups to ensure that your guide can provide individual support throughout the ascent. At the summit, you are rewarded with panoramic views over Svolvær and the surrounding fjords before concluding the climb with a thrilling 45-meter abseil descent back to the base.
This guided climb is designed to be accessible to anyone in good physical condition, with no prior rock climbing experience required. The only thing needed is to be comfortable with heights and steep mountain terrain. Participants are required to bring appropriate weather-resistant layers and sturdy approach shoes or hiking boots with reliable grip. While the summit exposure is significant, complete safety is maintained at all times as participants remain continuously tethered to certified ropes under the direct supervision of an experienced instructor.
The primary season runs from May through September, with optimal dry conditions during the summer months and late evening climbs possible under the midnight sun in June and July. Book your spot on this classic Norwegian route, and climb Svolværgeita!
