If surfing has always appealed to you, surfing lessons in Madeira can be a great way to get started!
Portugal is one of the best surfing countries in Europe. Being on the Atlantic Ocean, waves are guaranteed. When you think of surfing in Portugal, the first thing that comes to mind is the Algarve. But why not vary and be a little more original? Madeira is one of Portugal's natural treasures. This volcanic island has something for everyone: charming cities like Funchal, the capital; laurel forests where you can go hiking, beaches with crystal clear waters like Ribeira Brava... So why not take the opportunity to go surfing on one of these paradisiacal beaches? Around Freedom offers you a surf lesson at São Roque beach in Machico, the second most populated city of the island and only 10 minutes away from Porto da Cruz and Caniçal and half an hour from Funchal.
The course lasts 4 hours divided into a theoretical and practical part. Your instructor will welcome you at Around Freedom surf school. There, he/she will give you a short introduction to the activity and will give you the surfing equipment: the board, the wetsuit and the invention (the leash that attaches the board to your foot). In the first part of the course, the instructor will explain the different parts of the board, how to carry it and enter the water with it, how to stand up on the board... After half an hour, it's time to enter the water and put everything you've learnt into practice! You will be in the water for an hour and a half where the instructor will advise you and help you to master the technique. This is a course to learn how to surf, so don't worry if it's your first time on the board, your instructor will guide you at all times. You can choose between an individual course or a group class (up to 6 people).

- Welcome at the Surf School and short briefing about how the activity will be held.
- The surf equipment, surfboard and wetsuit will be provided.
- First part of the lesson (around 30 minutes) is dedicated to know your surfboard, warmup your body and intruduce you to the surf techniques. how to transport your board and across the whitewater, laidown and paddle, surf base position and the most important manover in surf the take-off.
- Then, ready to surf for about 1h30.
- Back to the surf school and return of the surf equipment.
Activity requirements
Knowing how to swim is compulsory for this activity.
The minimum height for this activity is 1,40m.
Special terms
Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of the activity.
The surfing location is weather-dependent, so the welcome and briefing might change to other beach, but you will be informed previously.

Transfers from Funchal, Caniço and Santa Cruz 10€ per person - Funchal, Meeting point (pick-up/drop-of) in front of the CR7 Museum.
