Also known as the Great African Sea Forest, Cape Town's underwater forest is an exceptional ecosystem in False Bay made up largely of kelp, a group of brown algae. Not only does it offer an astonishing underwater setting, similar to an underwater forest, but it also provides the chance to encounter an incredible array of wildlife, including Cape fur seals, reef fish, octopus, etc. It is a must for snorkelling in Cape Town, with a passionate local guide on hand to tell you all about the riches of this kelp forest. Ready to get in the water for 60 to 75 minutes of snorkelling?
Depending on the day's weather conditions, this snorkelling excursion in Cape Town's underwater forest could take place from Windmill Beach, St James or Miller's Point. You will be equipped with everything you need to get into the water (neoprene wetsuit, fins, mask and snorkel) and will be able to swim in complete safety under the supervision of your guide (1 guide for every 4 to 6 participants) in the waters of False Bay, which fluctuate between 10 and 18°C depending on the season. The snorkelling area will be chosen where the sea is calm, with visibility ranging from 3 to 10 metres to allow you to observe as much as possible beneath the surface, and in optimal conditions so that even people who can't swim can take part in the experience while holding onto a floating support.
Including a transfer from your accommodation in Cape Town (City Bowl or Cape Peninsula) and a stop at Boulders Beach to watch the adorable Cape penguins for a few minutes, this snorkelling trip in the False Bay kelp forest will give you an unforgettable encounter with the local marine animals. So if you love nature and are comfortable in the water, be sure to take part and create some memorable moments with your family, partner or friends!
