Activity description

Experience the largest annual gathering of Humpback Whales in the entire Southern Hemisphere on this boat excursion from the small harbour town of Yzerfontein!

In the Summer, mass groups of Humpback whales migrate to the West Coast of South Africa for feeding. This expedition-style boat safari will take you to the heart of the Humpback super groups to experience the whales from up close as they feed on the surrounding krill. Humpbacks are very playful during feeding: watch in awe as they jump - or breach - out of the water, dive into the depths of the ocean, and form clusters around the krill to optimise their feeding. You'll also get a first row seat to the famous Humpback whale song, as they communicate with their pod. Book your seats for a fully immersive and educational experience at sea with these gentle giants!

This excursion begins in Yzerfontein, a fishing town approximately 1 hour drive from Cape Town city centre. On arrival, breakfast pastries are served, and the boat itself will be packed with refreshments when we are at sea, including mineral water, soft drinks, and a variety of snacks. Before leaving, you are provided with the necessary equipment, including waterproof jackets and pants if needed.

Youwill then head out to see on 'Meganova', a low-capacity boat that is built both for optimal safety and comfort. There will be a maximum of 10 guests per expedition. The trip will take you around Dassen Island, whose seas are home to more than just the whales: frequent spottings include dolphins, seals, molo mola sun fish, and an array of marine fish.

The expedition guides will take videos and pictures; however, we recommend you bring your own cameras if you wish to take some more personal shots!

On return on dry land, enjoy a picnic-style lunch. As you eat, our expert whale specialist will debrief with you about what we have witnessed, so we can all go home more informed about humpbacks and their ecosystem.

This is the only expedition-style whale watching experience in South Africa - prepare yourself for a truly unique experience alongside our expert guides to learn about the incredible journey these whales have embarked on from Africa to Antarctica.
