Activity description

Cornwall's most hardcore coasteering course, follow routes paved by pirates and smugglers on this North Coast Challenge to Newquay’s Gazzle Headland or Gulley Route.

Push your boundaries and test your technique on this ultimate thrill-seeking coasteering excursion in Cornwall. A route pioneered by shipwrecked sailors and tea plundering pirates, cliff dive into the Atlantic, abseil down rocky crags and traverse challenging escarpments on this two-hour coasteering adventure along Newquay's rugged cliffs and coves.

Location
Coasteering in Cornwall is most popular around the rocky headland that connects Fistral Beach and Towan Beach. Overlooked by the iconic 19th-century Headland Hotel, the rocky outcrop is punctuated by old smugglers' caves and home to the area's resident seal population. Newquay’s Gazzle Headland is famed for its sea cliff jump, rapids and whirlpools. The activity centre is strategically located at Towan beach, the gateway to the Gazzle peninsula, and where the majority of coasteering adventures begin. The peninsula offers some of the most beautiful yet ecologically diverse and historically fascinating coasteering routes in Europe.

Activity
Meet your instructor at the activity centre at Towan Beach for a two-hour adventure coasteering challenge to Newquay’s Gazzle Headland or Gulley route. Suitable for true adventure seekers, kit up with your group and receive a full safety briefing - listing the correct coasteering techniques and covering how to enter and exit the water, traverse the cliff lines and wild swim safely between sections. During this adrenaline-fuelled North Coast Challenge, you’ll explore the smuggler's caves and craggy crevices - following an expert guide in navigating the cliff line, wild swimming between sections, traversing low level stretches, natural rapid riding and leaping from cliff ledges into deep water plunge pools. What’s more, your lead guide can also teach you all about the marine life and heritage synonymous with the Cornish coastline.

Conditions
Coasteering combines sea swimming, low-level climbing, traversing, natural rapid riding and ledge leaps into deep water plunge pools. Activities run along the Gazzle or Gulley, a sheltered stretch of coastline hosting an abundance of native wildlife. Coasteering tackles a rugged coastal route so you will need to bring a pair of lace-up shoes with hard soles.

Both my 15 year son and I enjoyed the 2 hours spent jumping off varying cliff edge heights. Extremely exhilarating and informative. Learnt about smugglers that brought in tea for onward distribution. Where they hid it in the various holes above caves and what happened to them when they got caught. Hung, to set an example, then bodies thrown into the sea to wash up in a local cove... Dale and his colleague were extremely informative and explained what you had to do clearly. Dale helped an extremely nervous participant and coaxed him to overcome his fear of heights! Brilliant day.

Great way to spend a few hours with the family. The 8, 10 and 12 year olds all loved it, and both parents had a great time too - highly recommended for all the family.
