Snowshoeing in Gaspesie offers a rare invitation to explore one of Quebec’s most captivating winter landscapes, where the Appalachian peaks meet the icy sweep of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This peninsula, stretching into the Atlantic, is renowned for its wild beauty and the ever-changing interplay of light on snow-draped forests and rugged summits. Parc national de la Gaspésie, at the heart of the region, is a sanctuary for caribou and boreal wildlife, while the nearby towns of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts and Cap-Chat serve as gateways to a world where silence is broken only by the crunch of snow underfoot and the distant call of a raven. Here, snowshoeing is more than a sport—it is a way to connect with the raw, elemental spirit of Gaspesie, where winter’s clarity sharpens every sense.

Setting out on snowshoes in Gaspesie, you’ll traverse a tapestry of terrain, from gentle river valleys to the wind-sculpted ridges of Mont Jacques-Cartier and Mont Albert. Typical outings range from two-hour forest immersions to full-day ascents, each offering a different rhythm and perspective. The snow underfoot can shift from powdery softness to a crisp, compact crust, while the air carries the scent of spruce and the faint tang of sea salt drifting inland. On clear days, sunlight glitters across untouched expanses, revealing animal tracks and the intricate patterns of frost on tree bark. Whether you’re moving quietly through dense woodland or pausing atop a panoramic lookout, the experience alternates between meditative calm and the invigorating challenge of climbing through deep snow, always framed by the vastness of the Gaspesie wilderness.

The snowshoeing season in Gaspesie typically runs from December to late March, when snow cover is reliable and the landscape is transformed into a pristine winter playground. More challenging itineraries are available for experienced hikers seeking elevation gain and longer distances. Families, couples, solo travellers, and small groups all find a welcome here, with guides adapting pace and difficulty to suit the needs and ambitions of each participant.

Our trip on the Mathilda was amazing. We saw tons of wildlife, caught a literal bucket full of mackerel, and learned a lot about the Gaspe area
