Nestled between the wild North Sea and the steep slopes of the Seven Mountains, Bergen is a city shaped by water. Embarking on a boat tour here is more than a simple excursion; it is an immersion in Norway’s coastal soul. From the historic Bryggen wharf, boats glide into a world where deep blue fjords cut through emerald hillsides, and the air carries a briny freshness unique to the western coast. The interplay of shifting clouds, glinting sunlight, and the distant calls of seabirds creates an atmosphere both invigorating and serene. Bergen’s harbour, with its colourful wooden houses and bustling quays, serves as the perfect departure point for exploring the region’s legendary waterways, including the Sognefjord, Hardangerfjord, and the intricate archipelagos that fringe the coast.

Practising boat tours in Bergen is a dynamic experience, shaped by the ever-changing weather and the dramatic landscape. Typical routes might weave through the narrow Osterfjord, skirt the rocky islets of the Hjeltefjord, or venture towards the tranquil waters of the Lysefjord. Depending on the chosen itinerary, excursions can last from a couple of hours to a full day, offering a spectrum of sensations: the gentle rocking of a classic wooden boat, the rush of wind and spray on a RIB adventure, or the quiet awe as you drift beneath towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls. The contrasts are striking—one moment, the fjord is hushed and glassy, the next, a sudden breeze ripples the surface and fills the air with the scent of salt and pine. Highlights often include glimpses of seals basking on rocks, the distant shimmer of Folgefonna glacier, and the soft, golden light of a Nordic evening.

Local guides in Bergen are seasoned mariners, many with generations of seafaring in their families. Their knowledge of the fjords, tides, and local wildlife ensures both safety and a rich, informative journey. All necessary equipment is provided, from life jackets to waterproof clothing, and boats are maintained to the highest standards. Accessibility is a priority, with many tours suitable for beginners and families, though a reasonable level of fitness is recommended for more active outings. The outdoor culture here is welcoming and inclusive, with guides eager to share stories of Viking routes, fishing traditions, and the rhythms of life along Norway’s rugged coast. Logistics are seamless, with departures from central Bergen and clear guidance at every stage.

Boat tours in Bergen are available year-round, though the experience shifts with the seasons. Spring and summer bring long daylight hours, mild temperatures, and vibrant green landscapes, ideal for leisurely cruises and wildlife spotting. Autumn offers dramatic colours and quieter waters, while winter reveals snow-dusted peaks and a crisp, invigorating atmosphere. Most tours are accessible to beginners, but participants should be comfortable on the water and prepared for variable weather. Families, solo travellers, and groups alike will find options tailored to their interests, from relaxed sightseeing to more adventurous fjord safaris.

To discover Bergen from the water is to see Norway’s fjord country at its most authentic and alive. Whether you seek tranquillity, adventure, or a deeper connection to the region’s maritime heritage, booking a boat tour with Manawa opens the door to unforgettable moments on the Norwegian coast.

The whole experience was awesome. My teenage sons had.never fished from a boat and were totally absorbed. It helped we had a dry and sunny day but we were given warm suits and gloves and hats if needed. The instructor was super and the lunch at the end delicious !

A beautiful autumn day kayaking together on the water. The sea and winds were calm and the sun was shining. We could've stayed out all day!
A great experience with two very knowledgeable guides/fishermen/cooks! Tour was great even starting out from the drive out from Bergen, with our guide sharing a lot about the area along the way. Once out on the sea we were greeted with beautiful views of the the sea and the surrounding islands, and were provided with all necessary equipment (rain jackets, pants, lifevest, fishing rods). Our guides managed everything very well and cooked up a delicious fish soup at end of it, topped off with Norwegian-style waffles with brumost, cream cheese and jam.

The fjord tour was incredible! Beautiful landscapes, and the boat was very quiet since it's electric. The train ride was also lovely. We enjoyed the whole tour, absolutely worth it.
