Sea kayaking in Bergen is more than a sport—it is an invitation to glide through a landscape shaped by glaciers and tides, where the city’s colourful wooden houses meet the deep blue of the fjords. The interplay of morning mist, shifting sunlight, and the ever-present scent of saltwater creates an atmosphere both invigorating and serene. Paddling a sea kayak in Bergen reveals a world that is both intimate and grand. Typical routes might lead you along the sheltered Byfjorden, past rocky islets and under the gaze of Mount Fløyen, or further out to the labyrinthine archipelago of Askøy and Sotra. The water’s surface can shift from glassy calm to gentle swells, offering moments of quiet reflection punctuated by the calls of gulls and the splash of your paddle. Depending on the chosen itinerary, excursions can last from a couple of hours to a full day, with opportunities to pause on sun-warmed rocks or explore hidden coves. While the basics are accessible to newcomers with reasonable fitness, the area’s variable conditions and tidal currents also provide technical challenges for experienced kayakers. The contrasts between tranquil inlets and open stretches of sea ensure every outing is dynamic and memorable.

The prime season for sea kayaking in Bergen stretches from late spring to early autumn, when daylight lingers and the fjords come alive with colour. The whole experience was awesome. My teenage sons had.never fished from a boat and were totally absorbed. It helped we had a dry and sunny day but we were given warm suits and gloves and hats if needed. The instructor was super and the lunch at the end delicious !

A beautiful autumn day kayaking together on the water. The sea and winds were calm and the sun was shining. We could've stayed out all day!
A great experience with two very knowledgeable guides/fishermen/cooks! Tour was great even starting out from the drive out from Bergen, with our guide sharing a lot about the area along the way. Once out on the sea we were greeted with beautiful views of the the sea and the surrounding islands, and were provided with all necessary equipment (rain jackets, pants, lifevest, fishing rods). Our guides managed everything very well and cooked up a delicious fish soup at end of it, topped off with Norwegian-style waffles with brumost, cream cheese and jam.

The fjord tour was incredible! Beautiful landscapes, and the boat was very quiet since it's electric. The train ride was also lovely. We enjoyed the whole tour, absolutely worth it.
