Gozo, the tranquil gem of the Maltese archipelago, invites you to discover snorkelling in an environment where the Mediterranean’s clarity meets a landscape shaped by time and tradition. The island’s indented coastline, carved by centuries of wind and waves, reveals hidden coves, natural arches, and limestone cliffs that plunge into turquoise waters. From the sunlit shallows of Hondoq ir-Rummien to the dramatic inlets near Xlendi and Marsalforn, Gozo’s shores offer a mosaic of textures and colours. The gentle hum of cicadas, the scent of wild thyme on the breeze, and the warm embrace of the southern sun create an atmosphere that is both invigorating and serene. Here, snorkelling is not just a sport but a way to immerse yourself in the island’s rhythm, where every swim reveals a new facet of Gozo’s coastal beauty.

Practising snorkelling on Gozo is an experience defined by contrasts and discovery. As you glide over submerged reefs and through underwater arches, shafts of sunlight dance across the seabed, illuminating schools of damselfish and the occasional octopus nestled among the rocks. The terrain varies from sandy bays to rugged outcrops, with visibility often exceeding 30 metres, allowing even novice snorkelers to feel part of the vibrant marine world. Typical excursions last between one and two hours, with routes tailored to the day’s conditions and the group’s experience. Some spots, like the Blue Hole near Dwejra or the sheltered inlet of Mgarr ix-Xini, offer calm, glassy surfaces and a sense of quiet exploration, while others present gentle currents and the thrill of discovering hidden caves. The water’s temperature, usually ranging from 18°C in spring to 27°C in late summer, adds to the comfort and appeal.

Local guides on Gozo are passionate about their island’s natural heritage and bring a wealth of knowledge to every snorkelling outing. Fully licensed and trained in safety protocols, they provide high-quality equipment, including masks, snorkels, fins, and wetsuits when needed. Before entering the water, guides brief participants on the site’s features, marine life, and safety measures, ensuring that everyone feels confident and secure. The island’s outdoor culture values respect for the sea and environmental stewardship, and guides are attentive to both the group’s abilities and the preservation of Gozo’s fragile ecosystems. Accessibility is a priority, with many sites reachable by short walks from nearby villages or harbours, and logistics are handled with care to make the experience seamless.

Snorkelling in Gozo is ideal from late spring through early autumn, when the sea is at its clearest and warmest. The activity is accessible to beginners, including families and children, yet still rewarding for experienced snorkelers seeking new underwater landscapes. While no previous experience is required, a basic level of swimming ability and general fitness ensures comfort and enjoyment. The variety of sites means that both gentle, shallow bays and more adventurous spots are available, accommodating different skill levels and preferences. We had a wonderful time with François and his friend! It was worth every minute we spent snorkeling. François picked us up at Mgarr ferry terminal and drove us to Mgarr Ix-Xini beach. We were given snorkeling gear (masks, shoes, suits) and a brief explanation on how everything worked. During our snorkeling session, François made sure we were always good, comfortable and made us feel very safe. He also gave us some tips on how to dive and allowed us to try it. We swam on areas that were more than 20 meters deep and the water was crystal clear during most of the session. We saw so many fishes and jellyfishes, we went to the dragon's breath cave with stunning purple rocks. It was truly an unforgettable experience! François is very chill, very patient and friendly, we are very happy to have booked this experience and will certainly come back if we visit Malta again.
