What are the activities to do in Vilamoura?

Sleek yachts, golden beaches, and stylish outdoor thrills, Vilamoura is the Algarve’s most refined coastal playground. Built around one of Europe’s largest marinas, this purpose-designed resort town blends luxury with a laid-back Mediterranean feel, offering a wide range of outdoor activities both on land and at sea.

Once a modest fishing port with roots stretching back to Roman times, Vilamoura underwent a dramatic transformation in 1966 when Portuguese banker Cupertino de Miranda founded a beach resort here. Today, it stands as one of Europe’s largest private tourism complexes and one of Portugal’s most prestigious destinations.

Catering primarily to European holidaymakers, Vilamoura offers everything from five-star hotels and golf resorts to scenic promenades and golden sand beaches. Though purpose-built and somewhat removed from the traditional Algarve aesthetic, it excels as a polished, peaceful, and activity-rich base.

At the heart of it all is the marina, a polished hub lined with boutiques, bars, and restaurants. It’s the perfect place for a stroll, a coffee with a view, or a departure point for your next adventure.

Outdoor Activities in Vilamoura

Jet Ski & High-Speed Water Sports

One of Vilamoura’s top activities. Feel the thrill of speeding across open water with the sun on your back and the coast flying past. Jet ski tours are exciting and scenic, offering full-speed fun in safe, supervised conditions.

Parasailing Above the Coast

The second must-do activity in Vilamoura. Strap into a harness and take flight as you're towed behind a boat, rising above the marina and beaches for breathtaking views over the Algarve’s shoreline. Smooth and safe, it’s suitable for most travellers seeking a rush.

Sailing & Private Yacht Tours

Whether you choose a luxury catamaran or a private yacht, sailing from Vilamoura Marina is a classic Algarve experience. Join a sunset cruise, drop anchor in a hidden bay, or charter a boat for the day with friends or family.

Stand-Up Paddle & Kayak

Explore the tranquil waters off Vilamoura’s coast or venture as far as Albufeira on a guided tour. Paddle past sea caves, cliffs, and beaches, perfect for nature lovers and those after a gentler pace.

Golf in the Algarve’s Green Oasis

Vilamoura is a golf paradise, home to several internationally renowned courses including Victoria, Pinhal, and the Old Course. Fringed by pines and dunes, these greens offer scenic rounds under the Algarve sun.

Local Tips

The marina gets lively in peak season, book sailing and water sports in advance.

Water shoes and sun protection are essential for sea-based adventures.

For a quieter, more local vibe, head next door to Quarteira for a traditional market or beachside walk.

Best Time to Visit

From May to October, Vilamoura shines with warm weather, calm seas, and a festive yet refined atmosphere. Spring and autumn are ideal for sailing, golfing, and uncrowded beach days, while summer is perfect for high-energy water sports.

How to Get There

Vilamoura is just a 30–40 minute drive from Faro Airport via the A22 or N125. Buses and taxis connect it easily with Faro, Albufeira, and other coastal towns. Once there, the marina and beaches are walkable, and cycling is a popular way to get around.

Extend Your Adventure

To the west, explore Albufeira’s bustling old town and beach life. To the east, Ria Formosa’s lagoons await with kayak tours and wildlife watching. Inland, the historic town of Loulé offers markets, crafts, and a slice of traditional Algarve.

Though Vilamoura is best known as a relaxing holiday haven, it’s also a place to break the routine, where elegant living meets outdoor excitement. Whether you’re flying high, speeding across the sea, or drifting at sunset, this is the Algarve with a touch of luxury and a taste for adventure.

We got about 15mins in the air, there was another couple with us so we got to chill on the speedboat too. The water was sooo choppy but it was a great experience and thrilling. It was easy to do, just follow the instructions.
