Defy gravity more than 5 metres above the ground and feel like Iron Man for a few minutes with the flyboard and hoverboard, these futuristic new activities invented by Franky Zapata.
Before you set off in search of the world's best flyboarding spots, you need to ask yourself this existential question: What is flyboarding? Basically, it's a platform attached to boots that are connected to the turbine of a jetski, allowing you to soar through the air and perform various freestyle tricks. You can reach heights of up to 12 metres, and some instructors will even take you up to 20 metres!
During your session, the instructor remains on the jet ski to control the engine throttle and regulate your power and height. As long as you have a body of water, whether a lake or an ocean, you can practice flyboarding and hoverboarding. You can find a more detailed introduction to flyboarding in the Beginner's Guide To Flyboarding article.
Our choice of spots will be based on the quality of the service and the reputation of the school, but above all on the exceptional panorama that surrounds you. Here's a small selection of must-see destinations for flyboarding in ideal conditions!
The Costa Brava, Spain
Just a short drive from Barcelona’s iconic architecture, the Costa Brava offers a fantastic backdrop for modern watersports such as flyboarding in Barcelona. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced flyboarder, you can choose a session that suits your goals: a 15-minute introductory flight to find your footing, a 30-minute session to practice steering, or a full hour to truly master the air.
At this location, schools use Zapata Racing's latest flyboard model, which features under-foot stabilization jets for optimum balance and safety. While finding your center of gravity takes a few minutes of trial and error, these newer boards make hovering surprisingly intuitive.
When you finish your flight, you're ideally placed to swap the wetsuit for a seat at a local beachside chiringuito (bar) to dive into Catalonia’s legendary seafood culture.
Malta
With its deep maritime history and dramatic rocky coastlines, Malta is a natural hub for advanced watersports. Hovering between jet skiing and wakeboarding, flyboarding in St. Julian’s Bay gives you a unique vantage point of the island's striking fortifications and coastal architecture.
Your instructor meets you at the marina near neighboring Sliema for a quick safety briefing and gear fitting. Once your lifejacket and helmet are secure, a 10-minute briefing on the water is usually all it takes to get you up and flying. Cruising through the air at up to 20 km/h, you’ll get a panoramic view of the bustling harbor below.
The Côte d'Azur
With summer water temperatures averaging a comfortable 22°C to 26°C, the French Riviera provides excellent conditions for trying out new watersports. While the nearby Côte Bleue offers great coastal views further west, Hyères stands out as a premier flyboarding destination thanks to its positioning between the sea and the mountains.
Flyboarding in Hyères gives you an aerial view of the Golden Isles (Îles d'Or) and the sweeping Presqu'île de Giens. Technically, the flyboard is powered through a 23-meter hose connected to the jet ski's propulsion system. By tilting your feet just 10 to 20 degrees, you can control your direction, banking smooth turns over the Mediterranean.
If you’re interested in exploring further flights along the French coast, flyboarding in Hendaye is an excellent choice in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, while La Baule stands out for a session in the Pays de la Loire.
Santorini, Greece
With the help of your instructor, learn to fly in the warm waters of Greece, propelled by the powerful water propulsion of the Santorini flyboard. Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in Greece's Aegean Sea, and is the largest and most populated island in this volcanic archipelago. Of course, it takes quite a bit of balance to stay upright, but after a small practice, you'll be able to master this crazy invention. And if you find your footing quickly, you can even attempt some freestyle tricks.
At Saint-George, you can soar above the deep blue sea while admiring the island's iconic white cliffs and blue houses. Perivolos beach, with its volcanic black sand and calm sea conditions, offers a spectacular setting for a safe flight. You'll be travelling at speeds of up to 40 km/h, and will be able to reach heights of 8 metres above the sea thanks to the power of the watercraft's pump.
If you’re looking to explore other flyboarding spots in Greece, flyboarding in Rhodes offers a fantastic mix of crystal-clear waters and historic coastal scenery, while flyboarders in Mykonos enjoy the energetic local lifestyle and ideal sea conditions, so both destinations are perfect for combining adventure and classic Mediterranean views.

Under the warm southern Italian sun, you can learn to soar above the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea, often referred to as the “Caribbean of Europe” for its turquoise hues and pristine coastline.
