What are the activities to do in Portimão?
Portimão is a cosmopolitan and sports city located in the Algarve region in southern Portugal. In the hills outside the city stands the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve race and test circuit, both for cars and motorcycles. Praia da Rocha, the most famous beach in the region, is also in Portimão.
Praia da Rocha, located nearby the Arade river, is a very popular spot among tourists. Let yourself be immersed in the crystalline water and golden sandy of this beautiful beach, where there are plenty of outdoor activities to do.
You will never get bored at night thanks to the numerous themed bars, lounge bars and nightclubs that animate the city. If you want to chill out in complete peace, just walk along the coast and you will find small and peaceful beaches on the edge of the cliffs.
In Praia da Rocha beach, there are so many sports and aquatic activities for every taste. You can practice beach soccer, kayaking, stand up paddling, jet skiing and even parasailing for thrill seekers! It is also here where the Mundialito, annual international beach soccer tournament, took place from 2005 to 2012.
If you wish to practice kitesurfing, one of the most popular water sport in Portugal, Alvor is the ideal spot. Located west of Portimão, Alvor is a historic civil parish with a lagoon which is perfect to learn how to kitesurf. Its large beaches are also perfect for more experimented kitesurfers. Stage of the kitesurf world championship PKRA for 3 years in a row, Alvor was tailor-made by nature to be the perfect kitesurf playground!
AlvorKiteCenter is a kiteboarding school whose experimented instructors are IKO-certified. IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) is the world’s leading organization dedicated to kiteboard education. This way, you will learn how to kitesurf carefully on the lagoon's flat water. The school provides surfcamp holidays suitable for all levels, lessons especially tailored for beginners, and personal coaching for those who already know the kitesurfing basics. If you don't have time to go on a surfcamp holiday, you can simply take lessons of up to 2 people for 3 days.
Portimão has really everything going for you: its vibrant city centre, the numerous activities to do in Praia da Rocha, and of course the Alvor lagoon which is perfect for kitesurfing.
