Course of events
You should plan to spend between 22 and 24 hours on this activity:
- 2 pm - Arrival at the meeting point and introduction to your instructor
- Equipment distribution
- Safety and activity briefing
- Start of the 22 to 24-hour climb up Mount Pico
- Enjoy the sunset while climbing up the mountain
- Arrive at the camping site for the night, watching the stars
- Set up camp and sleep
- Wake up before sunrise and climb up to the Mount Pico summit
- Climb down the mountain in the morning
- Return to the meeting point
- Equipment return and end of activity
Activity requirements
This is a very high-level activity, and being in good physical condition is required to participate. Experience in trails with an accentuated slope is recommended. For adults over 65 years old who are not used to practising physical activities, Tripix Azores reserves the right to request a physical exam and a respective medical certificate to guarantee the health conditions to perform the mountaineering activity.
All minors must be accompanied by an adult.
You cannot participate in this activity if you have gone diving less than 24 hours before it starts.
The use of hiking or mountaineering boots is essential.
Special terms
The permits to Mount Pico get sold out very fast in the high season (end of May to mid September). An early booking is advised to better guarantee availability from the provider.
This activity does not include food.
Please be advised that each participant will have to carry a backpack containing all the camping equipment provided: a tent (for 2 or 3 people), an individual inflatable sleeping pad, and a sleeping bag, which will be included in the backpack and weigh approximately 3-4kg. In addition, it is important to consider the mandatory water and food, personal belongings such as extra clothes or other equipment to carry, which may weigh between 12kg and 15kg in total.

In case you have a Drone and want to bring it for the climb, please inform your instructors as they (and you) need authorization from the director of Pico Natural Park. You'll also need to go on the website of ANAC (Portuguese Civil Aviation Authority) so you can register your device.
Even after the climb is confirmed, your instructor strongly advises you to book a night in your hotel anyway. Sometimes the Overnight Climbs are cancelled on the day before due to weather instability, and it’s safer to have a “Plan B”.

The Azores are an archipelago belonging to Portugal and located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. They are an amazing place to take part in adventure activities or simply relax on beautiful beaches with endless ocean views.
For this overnight climbing excursion up Mount Pico, you'll need to meet your expert guide at Casa da Montanha (Mountain House) at around 2 pm. There, you'll get geared up with your hiking poles and headlight, but you'll also prepare a backpack (which will be provided) with the included camping equipment (tent, mat, sleeping bag), and your personal belongings, including the food you bring on the excursion, since it is not included in the price.
Once everyone is well-equipped, it will be time to go! You'll start climbing up Mount Pico and continue along the afternoon until, at the time of sunset, you will arrive at the chosen camping site for the night. You'll enjoy the sunset, have dinner, stargaze if you want to, and go to sleep in your tent early because the rest of the overnight climbing excursion up Mount Pico will take place before sunrise the next day! You'll wake up before the first rays and reach the peak of the mountain in time to watch the sun rising over the horizon, an unmissable sight. Finally, you'll spend the rest of the morning climbing down Mount Pico, before the activity ends at around the same time as it started.
Now, we must inform you of a few disclaimers and requirements from the instructors that will be crucial to keep in mind before and after you book this overnight climbing excursion up Mount Pico:
- First, it is important to know that if you live a sedentary lifestyle, you will not be able to participate in this activity. You need to have a good physical condition, and it's better to have some experience hiking steep trails.
- You will need to carry your own food and camping equipment, as well as any extra clothes and necessities you want to bring, which means you should be ready to carry a backpack that weighs between 12 and 15 kg while on the climb.
- If you are pregnant or suffer from conditions such as heart problems, vertigo, mental or physical disabilities, asthma problems, diabetes, or respiratory sensitivity, you will not be able to participate in this activity.
- If you want to bring a drone on your excursion, you'll need to register it on the ANAC (Portuguese Civil Aviation Authority) website and let your instructors know beforehand so they can request authorisation for it.
