Usually practiced on wide sandy beaches, land sailing is an outdoor sport where you pilot a wheeled vehicle powered by a sail. Open to everyone, this activity offers a unique feeling of freedom as you harness the force of nature to glide across vast open spaces.

Best known as one of the D-Day landing sites during World War II, Omaha Beach is also a stunning spot to experience land sailing in Normandy. Stretching from Vierville-sur-Mer to Colleville-sur-Mer in the Calvados region, it provides the perfect playground.

To discover land sailing at Omaha Beach, join the team at Eolia Normandie, a certified French Land Sailing School that will be delighted to welcome you. Upon arrival, their professional instructors will introduce you to the basics of land sailing and go over essential safety instructions. You’ll then be equipped with high-quality gear: waterproof trousers, a windbreaker, and a helmet, along with a land yacht suited to your age (children’s models are slower than adult ones) and fitted with three sail sizes (from 2 to 7 m²) to adapt to different wind conditions.

Once aboard your land yacht, you’ll immediately feel the power of the wind propelling you at high speed across the smooth sands of Omaha Beach. You’ll sail safely along the shoreline while admiring Normandy’s breathtaking coastal landscapes, in a small group of up to 12 land yachts. Land-sailing was a great activity (until the wind died down!) I have sailed on water all my life and so was excited to try it on dry land. Also, even though I am in my 70s, and my grandson is 12, we both had no problem participating.

What a way to spend the last day of your holiday. Due to the tides the session was held early evening with clear blue skies. This then led to 2 hours of racing on the side in your own land yaught.
