Practical information
During this activity on the motu Taufari'i you will discover how a black pearl is made and snorkel near the pearl oyster lines to select an oyster yourself to harvest the black pearl.
Then, you can take your pearl home in a velvet pouch or transparent vial with white Bora Bora sand.
Course of events
- Pick-up from selected sites (see "special terms"): approx. 30-minute journey.
- Transfer by water shuttle to the activity site on motu Taufari'i.
- Meet your guide at the motu Taufari'i site, where you will be shown how black pearls are made.
- Transfer by boat to the oyster lines (5-minute journey).
- Snorkel with a guide in the water near the pearl oyster lines (30 minutes)
- Select an oyster to be opened once back on the motu (30 minutes).
- If you don't want to take part in the snorkelling, a guide will bring up a cage of oysters for you to choose an oyster from.
- Return by boat to motu Taufari'i (5-minute journey).
- Enjoy fresh seasonal fruit and cool drinks (water, juice, soft drinks, beer) to the sound of ukuleles.
- The guide will demonstrate how to open oysters that have previously been reeled in, and you'll discover the black pearl.
- Photo session with the guide and captain, in the magnificent setting of motu Taufari'i (with a backdrop of turquoise sea and a view of Bora-Bora's famous Mount Otemanu)
- You can choose to take your pearl with you in a velvet pouch or a transparent vial with white Bora Bora sand.
- The activity ends with your return by water shuttle to the pick-up point (hotel pontoon or Vaitape quay): approximately 30 minutes' journey.

Cruise ship guests are collected directly from the Vaitape quay where the cruise leaves them.
This activity is free for children up to 5 years old. Swimming at the snorkelling site is not forbidden or compulsory, but requires a great deal of care, as the water is 10 to 20 metres deep in places. Buoys and ropes are available if required. No pearls are offered to children aged 0 to 5.
This activity is not open to women who are more than 5 months pregnant (more than 23 weeks of amenorrhoea), people with motor/mental/psychic/cognitive disabilities, people aged over 75, or pets.
