Paddle among icebergs and reach the top of an almost inaccessible mountain with an expert in the region on this incredible kayaking and hiking excursion around Heinabergslón Glacier Lagoon and Hafrafell Mountain! Located just at the eastern edge of the Vatnajökull National Park, near Skaftafell, Heinabergslón is a stunning glacier lake with calm, iceberg-filled waters, little known to most of the world. Hafrafell, on the other hand, is a mountain located west of the lake, which offers stunning, unparalleled views of southeastern Iceland, though it is not the only mountain with the same name in the country, and it is generally inaccessible by road, which means that it can only be reached by crossing the glacier or by kayak.
On the day of your kayaking and hiking excursion around Heinabergslón Glacier Lagoon and Hafrafell Mountain, you'll need to arrive at the meeting point in the Hotel Smyrlabjörg, near Skaftafell. There, you'll meet your expert instructor and learn about all the safety measures you'll need to take to have a great time throughout the day. Then, you'll receive your equipment, which will include an inflatable kayak, paddle, PFD (life jacket), drysuit, and water shoes, and have some time to gear up before the adventure starts.
Once you're ready, it will be time to go! You'll start your kayaking and hiking excursion around Heinabergslón Glacier Lagoon and Hafrafell Mountain by taking a 20-minute ride in a 4x4 vehicle that will bring you to the starting point of the activity, at the edge of the lake. Then, you'll inflate the kayaks and start paddling in Heinabergslón! After around 1.5 to 2 hours of kayaking with your expert instructor, who will teach you how to maneuver the icebergs around the lake, you'll reach the southern shore.
That's when you'll take off your drysuit, put on your hiking boots, and start the way up Hafrafell. It will take between 1 and 2 hours to reach the stunning viewpoint overlooking an outlet glacier that descends from the Vatnajökull ice cap, as well as reaching an area that just 20 years ago was part of the glacier. You'll get to take a break to eat and enjoy the view before retracing your steps in order to return to the original meeting point for the end of your kayaking and hiking excursion around Heinabergslón Glacier Lagoon and Hafrafell Mountain.
It is important to keep in mind that this is a very sporty activity, since you'll be hiking for at least a few kilometers in difficult, rocky terrain with a 10 to 15-kilogram backpack always strapped to your back. If you are not used to hiking and being outdoors, this might prove to be a bit too challenging for you. You should also remember to come prepared with warm, waterproof winter clothes, hiking boots, warm socks, a hat, gloves, a bottle of water, snacks, and lunch, as well as anything else you might need (medicine, extra clothes, etc) to spend an amazing 6 hours on this kayaking and hiking excursion around Heinabergslón Glacier Lagoon and Hafrafell Mountain!
If you're venturing into the Vatnajökull National Park and would like to enjoy a day full of adventure with an expert instructor who knows the area and is an expert in handling glacier lakes, don't hesitate to book this amazing kayaking and hiking excursion around Heinabergslón Glacier Lagoon and Hafrafell Mountain! You won't regret it.
