About the activity

Learn a new skill and discover the incredible landscapes in the southern side of Iceland on this amazing packrafting excursion around Fláajökull glacier, near Skaftafell! Fláajökull is a small outlet glacier located in the Vatnajökull National Park, in southeastern Iceland. This amazing place is close to the Breiðabunga volcano, and it boasts beautiful green moss, waterfalls, moulins (or glacier mills), and, of course, a lot of snow.

On the day of your packrafting excursion around Fláajökull glacier, near Skaftafell, you'll need to arrive at the meeting point in the Hotel Smyrlabjörg. There, you'll meet your expert instructor and learn about all the safety measures you'll need to take to have a great time throughout the day. Then, you'll receive your equipment, which will include an inflatable kayak, paddle, PFD (life jacket), drysuit, water shoes, and a waterproof backpack to carry it all, and have some time to gear up before the adventure starts.

Once you're all geared up, you'll head off! You'll start your packrafting excursion around Fláajökull glacier, near Skaftafell, by taking a 20-minute ride in a 4x4 vehicle that will take you toward the starting point of the activity. Then, you'll hike for 30 minutes toward the lake where you'll kayak, and pass through the spectacular Bólstaðafoss waterfall. You'll take the time to inflate the kayak and listen to a few instructions and safety measures you will need to follow before you start paddling.

Once your instructor considers that you're ready, you'll jump into your packraft kayak and start the adventure! You'll paddle for around an hour to reach a specific spot on the lake's shore and tie your kayak to a skerry that is still emerging from under the glacier. Here, you'll descend your vessel and take a 10 to 15 minute hike toward the glacier for an incredible view of the lake, but also (if the weather permits it) to walk on its icy surface. You'll then retrace all your steps to return to the original meeting point and return the equipment for the end of this kayaking excursion around Fláajökull glacier, near Skaftafell.

It is important to keep in mind that this is a sporty activity, since you'll be hiking for at least 4 kilometers in difficult, rocky terrain with a 7 to 10-kilogram backpack always strapped to your back. If you are not used to hiking and being outdoors, this might prove to be a bit too challenging for you. You should also remember to come prepared with warm, waterproof winter clothes, hiking boots, warm socks, a hat, gloves, a bottle of water, and snacks, as well as anything else you might need (medicine, extra clothes, etc) to spend an amazing 3.5 hours on this packrafting excursion around Fláajökull glacier, near Skaftafell!
