A 3-hour guided mountain bike ride between Arrone and Scheggino.
- Route of approximately 40 km along the River Nera (the Via delle Acque), following the route of the old Terni–Ferentillo tram line
- Intermediate-level route with a maximum elevation gain of 800 metres
- Use of standard Specialized mountain bikes, fitted with a suspension fork
Course of events
Please allow around 4 hours for the whole experience.
- Welcome at the Umbria in Mountain Bike base in Arrone and introductions (free car park and toilets available on site)
- Allocation of bicycles and safety equipment
- Briefing on the programme of the activity, the route, safety instructions and how the mountain bikes work
- Set off on a guided mountain bike tour lasting around 3 hours along the Via delle Acque:
- ride along the River Nera to the medieval village of Scheggino (about 1 hour and 15 minutes)
- tour of the village and a break (15–30 minutes)
- return journey to Arrone, with the option – for experienced cyclists only – of taking a short but challenging detour via Umbriano (a 1.5 km climb over rough terrain with gradients of 20%, followed by a descent into the valley along a very technical single track) (approx. 1 hour and 15 minutes)
- Return to base for a short recovery/stretching session, with the option to wash your equipment before handing it back to the team to round off the activity
- If you wish, you can choose to have a local snack at the base by booking a ‘local produce picnic basket’ in advance (2 sandwiches with local cold meats, half a bottle of mineral water, a piece of fruit and a sweet treat for €8 per person), prepared that very morning by a local grocery shop

All participants must know how to ride a bike and be in good physical condition to take part in this activity.
All minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Special terms
This activity is not recommended for pregnant people and is not accessible to people aged over 60.
Pets are welcome to join in this activity (trailer rental available on site for €20).
You can also rent the following accessories on site for an additional charge: a baby carrier (max. 25 kg) (€10) and a child or dog trailer (max. 45 kg) (€20).

Less than a 2-hour drive north of Rome lies the Nera River Park, a protected natural area that is not to be missed if you are fancying a nature getaway in the heart of Umbria. Indeed, this area offers a wide range of outdoor activities, including this guided mountain bike tour to Scheggino, setting off from Arrone. Designed for cycling enthusiasts aged 7 and over who are in good physical condition, this ride follows the Via delle Acque along the left bank of the River Nera, tracing the route of the old Terni–Ferentillo tram line. In total, the proposed route covers around 40 km through the heart of the Nera River Park, passing through forests and authentic villages that provide the ideal setting for an outdoor getaway.
The Umbria in Mountain Bike team invites you to join them on this 3-hour mountain bike ride through the Nera River Park, heading towards the medieval village of Scheggino. It will take you about 1 hour and 15 minutes to cycle to the village, where you will take the time to explore, whilst listening to your guide share their knowledge about the place. On the way back to Arrone, you will be offered the chance – but only if your group consists of experienced cyclists – to take a detour via the ghost village of Umbriano, which can be reached via a rugged 1.5 km climb with gradients of 20%. It will be up to your guide to decide whether or not your group is able to take this challenging detour.
