Svalbard is the Northernmost inhabited place in the world and famous for its rich wildlife, ancient glaciers and all year snow-covered landscapes. On this exciting boat tour, you will head out far into the Arctic Circle to a local Walrus colony.
During the summer months, they love to sunbathe on the beach. And you will get the unique opportunity to observe these funny and fascinating animals from a close distance!
One of their favourite spots close to Longyearbyen is Poolepynten which is located on the island of Prins Karls Forland. You will get there by speedboat! Don't worry, the boats are comfortable as they are closed, heated and dry and equipped with a panorama bar and restrooms.
You will start this day tour by crossing the beautiful Isfjord. On the way, you will get the chance to see Atlantic puffins and other birds which nest on Svalbard during the Summer months.
Trygghamna is located half-way on your way to the walruses and it's the northern entrance of the Isfjord. Rugged mountains rise up to 900 meters above you and below the cliffs, you might be able to spot reindeers and foxes which utilise the fertile landscape here.
This area has been used by trappers and hunters for centuries and your guides can tell you many fascinating stories about them.
Now it's time to leave the Isfjord and head north towards the scenic west coast of Spitsbergen. If the weather conditions are good, you might stop at the beach of Poolepynten in order to stretch your legs.
Finally, you will arrive at the destination. Usually, there are up to 30 walruses in the colony. They are standing on the beach and arguing about the best spots for sunbathing. You will hear them clearly! Don’t forget to bring your camera as you will have perfect opportunities for photos.
If the weather conditions are really poor, you will still be able to see them up close from the deck of the boat.
There will be a light lunch on board before you start heading back to Longyearbyen. On the way back, you will pass the abandoned mining Ghost Town of Grumant, located in the middle of steep mountains.
Please be aware that the guides of this tour can never guarantee to see wildlife. However, it's a popular spot for walruses and your experienced guides for this tour will make sure you get an authentic and unique experience out there in the Arctic! Also, the final destinations can change due to weather conditions. Unfortunately, the weather forecasts are never 100% reliable within this region, therefore, be prepared that the route might be flexible.
