Activity description

Spend the night in the Arctic wilderness, witness the Northern Lights, and go reindeer sledding, while also learning about Sámi culture and history on this unique overnight experience from Tromsø. Welcoming adventurers of all ages!

The indigenous people of Norway, the Sámi, have a rich cultural life and history that dates back thousands of years. Reindeer herding is one of the most iconic aspects of Sámi culture, as it is a traditional means of Sámi livelihood and a symbol of their culture. If you want to immerse yourself in the Arctic wilderness, interact with wildlife, and learn more about other cultures, this excursion is definitely for you!

Your adventure begins at the meeting point in Tromsø, where you and your group (a maximum of 12 participants) will depart for the 45-minute scenic drive to the Tromsø Lapland base. Located in the wilderness with a stunning mountainous backdrop of the Lyngen Alps, the reindeer farm has a herd of over 200 reindeer! Upon your arrival, you will be greeted by your experienced guide and put on your winter gear, which includes thermal overalls and boots.

Then, the fun starts! You will embark upon a 30-minute reindeer sledding excursion and experience the thrill of being pulled by a reindeer under the stunning Arctic sky at night. If luck is on your side, you may witness the incredible natural phenomenon of the Northern Lights. Far away from the city lights, you'll marvel at nature's wonder. After the ride, you'll have an up-close encounter with the reindeer as you feed them and will learn more about these majestic creatures.

Afterwards, you will head to a Lavvo-hut (a Sámi tent) for a delicious and traditional meal, followed by warm beverages. As you enjoy your dinner, your guide will share fascinating insights into Sámi culture and history, as well as show their handicrafts and clothing. Once the rest of the larger tour departs, you will stay on and be accompanied to your tent. There, your guide will show you the centuries-old Sámi technique of "hot camping" a resolutely Sámi experience that will keep you cosy, safe, and warm despite the freezing Arctic temperatures. Now it's time to relax and unwind. The next morning, you will be treated to a hardy breakfast before heading back to Tromsø.

For an unforgettable adventure in Norway, don't miss this overnight reindeer sledding and Northern Lights experience from Tromsø!

A great experience. After a week in Tromsø we finally got to see the northern lights, and they were spectacular. Getting to interact with reindeer through sledding and feeding them was very cool. Learning firsthand about Sami culture was awesome, and it was quite the adventure to stay over night in a lavvo.
