About the activity

Discovering Sami culture is an unmissable experience during a stay in northern Sweden, as the Sami are Europe’s last indigenous people, with a culture and traditions all their own. Found throughout Lapland, they are often associated with their primary activity, reindeer husbandry, although their cultural heritage encompasses much more, including the joik musical tradition and 10 Sami languages. To learn more about them, why not join this excursion to the Nutti Sámi Siida open-air museum in Jukkasjärvi, departing from Abisko or Björkliden for easy access to the site just outside Kiruna?

On arrival, you will have the pleasure of meeting a herd of reindeer, which you can pet and even feed by purchasing small packets of moss. A local guide will also greet you to provide a 45-minute guided tour of the museum, sharing insights into Sami culture and history. Between memorable encounters and enriching discoveries about the incredible Sami heritage, your 3 hours on site will fly by! You will also have free time before and after the guided tour to spend more time with the reindeer, pick up some souvenirs, and enjoy lunch (picnic or on-site restaurant, at your own expense).

Just a 1.5-hour drive from Björkliden and Abisko, the Nutti Sámi Siida open-air museum offers a wonderful immersion into the world of the Sami people, suitable for families as well as solo travellers, couples, and groups of friends. Don’t miss the chance to join this excursion in Jukkasjärvi to discover Sami culture and meet reindeer near Kiruna!
