Experience an amazing dog sledding activity and connect to the wild north in Svappavaara near Kiruna. Welcoming adventurers from ages 6 and up on this family-friendly excursion!
Kiruna is the northernmost town of Swedish Lapland, situated close to the Arctic Circle. Svappavaara is part of the larger mining region around Kiruna, and is characterised by the subarctic climate and a landscape dominated by forests and lakes. Dog sledding is an exciting activity to discover the wilderness of Kiruna!
For this trip, you have the option of being picked up in Kiruna or meeting directly at the activity base. Your experienced guide will greet you and introduce you to the friendly dogs. Firstly, you will dress in warm Arctic clothing followed by instructions on how to safely sit and drive the sled. On this combo tour, one person drives and the other rides with a team of 5-6 dogs (depending on the weather conditions and your combined weight). Halfway through you will get to swap over so everyone gets to try both driving and riding.
Once you are prepared, you will set off into the forests, covering a distance of approximately 18km (11 miles) of varied landscapes. Your dogs will pull you across the optimal varied landscape, namely forest areas, swamps, open spaces, and a creek. Midway through the excursion, you can switch drivers before heading back to the starting point.
When you return to the kennel, you can help to feed your own team of dogs and unharness them before they go back to their yards. A hot cup of tea or coffee and a delicious cinnamon roll will be served as you warm up around a roaring fire. The guide will answer any questions you may have about life as a husky musher. If there are any puppies at the time you can also cuddle and play with them! At the end of the tour, you will return to your pick-up point in Kiruna.
