Nestled just an hour south of Paris, the Fontainebleau Forest offers a rare blend of natural beauty and open skies, making it an exceptional destination for paramotoring. This ancient woodland, stretching over 25,000 hectares in the Seine-et-Marne region, is famed for its rolling boulders, sandy paths, and a canopy that shimmers with shifting light. From above, the forest reveals a patchwork of emerald and gold, interspersed with clearings and the winding Loing River. The nearby town of Fontainebleau, with its historic château and vibrant market squares, adds a touch of cultural charm to the adventure. Paramotoring here is not just about flight; it is an invitation to experience the spirit of the Île-de-France countryside from a unique perspective, where the quiet of the treetops meets the thrill of open air.

Taking off from the soft, sandy terrain at the forest’s edge, paramotor pilots ascend gently, the engine’s hum blending with birdsong and the rustle of leaves. The typical flight routes trace the contours of the forest, offering panoramic views over the Gâtinais plains and glimpses of the Château de Fontainebleau’s ornate rooftops. Flights usually last between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on weather and chosen itinerary. The sensation is a harmonious balance between serenity and exhilaration—moments of peaceful gliding punctuated by gentle turns and climbs. The air is fresh, tinged with the scent of pine and earth, and the shifting sunlight creates a tapestry of colours across the treetops. The terrain below alternates between dense woodland, open heath, and the distinctive sandstone outcrops that have drawn climbers and artists for generations.

Local paramotoring guides in Fontainebleau are experienced professionals, deeply familiar with the region’s microclimates and topography. I went bouldering with my two boys, age 10 and 12, and was guided by our fabulous leader, Fred, his son, and his fabulous dog, Nessie, who was a better boulderer than all of us! It was a great day and Fred was a great instructor - patient, energetic, safe, and knowledgeable. My boys are new climbers and I have recently started climbing, again, after a long hiatus. Fred found stuff for all of us to do and helped with great feedback and beta. He also climbed everything we did in jeans and sneakers, so I am fairly certain he would be an equally impressive guide for hard bouldering, too :)
