From the bustling promenade of North Beach to the quieter stretches near the Bluff, the city’s coastline offers a mosaic of marine habitats. Here, sunlight dances across the water’s surface, illuminating coral gardens and rocky outcrops teeming with life. The scent of salt and the distant hum of the city blend with the rhythmic sound of waves, creating an atmosphere that is both invigorating and serene. The experience of snorkelling in Durban is defined by contrasts and sensory richness. Guided excursions typically begin with a gentle entry from the shore or a short boat ride to nearby reefs, such as those off Vetch’s Pier or the protected waters near uShaka Beach. The water, warmed by the Agulhas Current, feels inviting against the skin, while visibility often reveals a kaleidoscope of colours—emerald seagrass, vibrant corals, and schools of butterflyfish, parrotfish, and the occasional turtle gliding by. Sessions usually last one to two hours, allowing ample time to explore the intricate textures of the reef and the shifting play of light beneath the surface. Conditions can range from calm, glassy mornings ideal for beginners, to livelier afternoons when the swell adds a sense of exhilaration. Whether floating quietly above a sandy bottom or weaving through rocky crevices, each moment offers a new perspective on Durban’s marine life.

We went free diving/snorkelling to see the sharks. It was an amazing experience. The dive master clearly explained the procedure and it is all very safe. When you come to the open sea and the bait with fresh sardines is thrown into the water, hundreds of sharks are immediately around. Amazing sight. First you are a bit afraid to jump into the water, but when you are in the sea and you see a 2m shark swimming by, you know that this is something you will never forget.
