To slip beneath the surface of the Mediterranean in Marseille is to enter a world where history, geology and marine life converge in a uniquely vibrant setting. This ancient port city, set against the dramatic limestone cliffs of the Calanques National Park and the azure sweep of the Côte Bleue, offers an exceptional backdrop for scuba diving. The interplay of sunlight on the water, the scent of salt and pine drifting from the coast, and the distant hum of city life create an atmosphere that is both invigorating and serene. Marseille’s underwater landscapes are renowned for their diversity, from shipwrecks steeped in maritime lore to colourful reefs teeming with life, making it a prime destination for divers seeking both adventure and discovery.

Diving in Marseille is a sensory journey shaped by the region’s varied underwater terrain. Typical excursions might begin in the sheltered coves of the Calanques, where limestone walls plunge into clear blue depths, or venture further to explore the Frioul archipelago, just a short boat ride from the Vieux-Port. Here, divers encounter a mosaic of habitats: forests of swaying seaweed, rocky drop-offs, and caves echoing with the gentle crackle of marine life. The water temperature ranges from a refreshing 14°C in spring to a balmy 24°C in late summer, with visibility often exceeding 20 metres. Whether gliding through schools of barracuda, tracing the contours of a sunken cargo ship, or pausing in the quiet to watch a shy octopus emerge from its lair, each dive offers a balance of tranquillity and excitement. The contrasts between bustling marine life and moments of stillness, between sunlight filtering through kelp and the cool shadow of a wreck, define the Marseille diving experience.

Probably one of the highlights of our stay in Marseille. Lovely atmosphere, helpful staff and great outdoor activity. Saw lots of fish. Was our first time snorkelling but instructions were really clear and we were able to return to boat to take a break and a drink of water
