This region, nestled between the Atlantic coast and the first peaks of the Pyrenees, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and vibrant local culture. The scenery is both dramatic and inviting: emerald forests line the riverbanks, while the distant silhouettes of La Rhune and the surrounding mountains frame the horizon. The air carries the scent of damp earth and wildflowers, and the sound of rushing water is a constant companion. Itxassou and Bidarray, two charming Basque villages, provide an authentic backdrop where tradition and outdoor adventure meet, making this area a prime destination for riverboarding enthusiasts seeking both excitement and a sense of place.

Hydrospeeding on the Nive is a dynamic, sensory-rich experience. Equipped with a buoyant board and fins, you navigate the river’s lively currents, feeling the cool spray on your face and the textured stones beneath the surface. Typical routes wind through alternating stretches of calm, crystalline water and exhilarating rapids, such as the famous “Pas de Roland” near Itxassou. Sessions usually last between one and two hours, offering a balance of adrenaline and moments of quiet, where sunlight filters through the trees and the river’s rhythm slows. The terrain is varied, with gentle sections ideal for building confidence and more technical passages that challenge your reflexes and stamina. The contrast between the tranquil pools and the roar of whitewater creates an unforgettable journey, heightened by the vivid greens of the landscape and the ever-changing play of light on the water.

The rafting was great fun. Our 3 teenagers really enjoyed it. We loved being in control of the raft-paddling and steering. Jakes was really fun and patient. We did some rock jumping and other bits down river. Only 1 negative is that it was 3 hours with prep and travel and it was meant to be 4 hours. But good to be left wanting more!
